The Mimic Spartan wasa hardware device that allowed Commodore 64 users to run Apple II+ software.It essentially turned the C64 into an Apple II+ by providing Apple II+ hardware and software compatibility.The device plugged into the Commodore 64's user port, cassette port, serial port, and cartridge port, and included its own power supply.

• Hardware Integration:It connected to the C64 through various ports, effectively transforming the C64 into a hybrid machine with both Commodore 64 and Apple II+ functionality.
• Memory Expansion:The Spartan included a 64K RAM expansion for the Apple II+ emulation.
• Software Compatibility:It allowed users to run Apple II+ software on their Commodore 64.
• DOS Card:The device also included a DOS Card, an Apple II disk controller that could be installed inside a Commodore 1541 disk drive.

Very rare, fully working and tested Mimic Systems Spartan. Quite possibly one of a handful remaining working example of the type left in the world.

The case was cleaned along with all the boards. There are no cracks or breaks in the plastic. The top is released by the two black switches in the back of the computer case. There is some yellowing, small nicks and marks but nothing major.

The Spartan comes with:

1. Original CPU card.

2. BUSS board. (the main board where all expansions and CPU card plug into)

3. DOS card. The DOS card can be used to turn a Commodore 1541 disk drive into a Apple II compatible disk drive. I tried to test the DOS card on a Commodore 1541 Disk Drive but it was very intermittent. It could be because the 1541 that I used was being a bit flakey on me in the first place. Or, it could mean that the card will need the buyer’s attention to restore it. Therefore, the DOS card has not been tested.

4. Generic Apple II floppy controller card. This floppy controller card is not the original so called “C2 controller card” that would have come initially bundled with the Spartan but works just as well as a standard Apple II floppy disk controller card. My guess is that it was swapped out by the original owner because it just worked better.

5. Although we tried to DOS card on a Commodore 1541 disk drive, I just believe that the disk drive we were testing it on wasn’t working fully. Thus, we marked the DOS card as not tested. This might need more attention by the new owner.

The Spartan was confirmed fully working by running various BASIC programs in both C64 and Apple II mode. The Spartan ran Apple II games (Oregon Trail) and various C64 software from both floppy and cart. (see videos demonstration)

This Spartan also comes bundled with early Silver Label Commodore 64 also fully tested 100% working. The computer is not only the early rare model but has a very low serial number of #9939. The Diagnostic screenshot shows the “controller port” failing test with a bad “6581” (SID) chip. This is a known limitation of the diagnostic utility on early revision C64. The ports and SID chip have been confirmed working separately. The keyboard was also refurbished, and all contacts were cleaned. The case and motherboard were cleaned. The Silver Label comes in the original box with however, the serial numbers have fallen off some time it the past.

A copy of the full Spartan manual is provided. This is not the original manual but a known good and complete copy.

A DIN-5 to RCA cable is provided with the Spartan which can be used for video and audio output. The Spartan has 2 video outputs. One of the outputs is the “switched” output which lets you switch between C64 and Apple II mode from a single monitor. The RCA plug red and black have been labeled for this output.

A lot of work went into making sure that this unit was fully tested and working. It wasn’t just tested to power on. I spent hours to make sure that whoever purchases this knows that it was given full attention. I decided to place a Silver Label Commodore 64 with it because it added to the Museum quality of this purchase. This really is one the holy grails of computer collecting.

policies leave me with no choice but to mark each of my sales with a “no return” policy. This is being done to protect me against returns such as (buyer’s remorse). After using the item for days and weeks, the buyer can submit a return and is not obligated to reimburse the seller for shipping charges and I have to pay for shipping charges back. Even though it is marked a “no return, “a buyer can still submit a return if the item was not as described or the item was damaged during shipping. Also, I do not need an policy to do what is right and accept the item back if it wasn’t as described or damaged during shipping. Keep in mind, that I mainly sell vintage computers and vintage computer accessories. That said even though the box/item may not show damage, the internal mechanism may have been damaged or jarred from a rough truck and/or plane ride. I will work with ALL my customers to resolve the problem. Recently, I have had to take back items where the buyer didn’t check with mom/dad, husband/wife, or God prior to buying and did a return. forced me to take the item back. Personally, I do not think that this is an acceptable way to return items. Many of the sellers on here are just trying to provide for their families and this kind of previous return is not fair to the seller. We are not Walmart or Costco that cannot absorb these financial damages. Again, I will work with all my costumers to ensure that they are happy with the item they purchased.
