Vintage AcerPower, 3DFX, SBLive, TURBO (plays late 80's to late 90's PC games)
Price: US $650.00
This PC has been fully electronically restored plus upgraded to a gaming platform from a non-working condition that focused on playing late 1980 PC games to late 1990 PC games plus a multi-media computer. I replaced all the bad capacitors, installed a Voodoo 3 2000 video card, SBLive soundcard and the accompanying Creative Live Drive DR that includes the remote. I also installed a brand new 80 gig Seagate HD (capacity set to the 32 gig limit due to a BIOS limitation), Thermaltake 350w PSU, 32GB Compact Flash with CF card holder and completely cloned the main drive using the included HDClone program to the CF card so you will never have to worry about the "Blue screen of Death" as you can quickly clone the CF card backup drive to the new main primary drive using the included HDClone program. Includes the HD power switching PCI slot adapter, Acer restore CD, added a Turbo switch, many cables, ect.... NOTE: The metal PC case and plastic are in need of love and reveal the age of this desktop computer with scratches, a small dent on left rear side and surface rust plus some discoloration of the plastic. If you have the talent you can continue this restoration process and make this very late factory OEM Turbo feature equipped socket 370 desktop computer look brand new. I have a lot of blood sweat and tears plus cash investment in this restoration and this is why the price is what it is. You can access the advanced BIOS options from the main BIOS menu by pressing the F8 key. From the advanced BIOS options menu new options will be made available to you such as disabling the L1 or L2 cache from within the Memory/Cache tab.The original Pentium 3 650Mhz processor is included. If you have any questions in the meantime please do not hesitate to ask while I work on this listing.
There are three different processing power configurations that you can obtain by utilizing the BIOS settings to either disable or enable the cache and or the turbo switch to change the front side buss frequency between 66Mhz or 100Mhz. Below is the result of your choices:
If you want to play late 80's and early 90's PC games (688 Attack Sub, Wings of Fury) that use the speaker for sound output then do this to achieve the processing power of a 80286 12Mhz processor:
1.) Make sure the Turbo switch is not engaged (66Mhz FSB - switch is in the DOWNWARD position)
2.) Click on the top right corner shortcut to Restart in MS-DOS. During the reboot and when prompted press Ctrl-Alt-Esc keys together to enter the BIOS and once at the main BIOS screen press the F8 key to activate the hidden Advance Options tab. Click on the Memory/Cache tab and disable both the L1 and L2 caches then choose to save your settings as you exit the BIOS by hitting the Esc key three (3) times and choose the default YES to save. The BIOS will pause during the reboot and prompt you to investigate and verify the changes. Press F1 to continue the booting process.
3.) Once the computer is booting into MS-DOS choose the number that will best support your game. NOTE: The *SBLive sound card will not function properly at this low of a CPU power setting nor will it function without the L1 cache being enabled.
*There is an ESS ES1938S sound chip on the motherboard that does not require expanded memory to function in DOS. The driver setup is quite challenging and I did not want to mess with it.
If you want to play early to mid 90's DOS or Windows games that support sound other than the PC speaker (examples: Chuck Yeager Air Combat, POD GOLD) and want to be able to use the included Sound Blaster Live with your games that support it then do this to achieve the equivalent of a Pentium II 300Mhz.
1.) Same as above.
2.) Turn the computer on and boot into the BIOS by pressing together the Ctrl-Alt-Esc keys when prompted then press the F8 key from the main BIOS screen to activate the Advanced Options tab. Click on the Advanced Options tab and then choose Memory/Cache Options and click on it... (NOTE: PLEASE IGNORE the option that allows you to set a CPU multiplier frequency from anywhere between 1.5X all the way to 8.0X. Leave it at the [Fixed CPU] setting otherwise you can really pooch your install of Windows98SE.)...and from there you will want to re-enable the L1 cache. (Leave the L2 cache DISABLED) You can now hit ESC three time to leave the BIOS screens and then choose YES to save on exit.
3.) Basically the same as above unless you need CD-ROM support in which you will need to choose option one (1): Expanded memory + Mouse + CD-ROM. Please remember that in order for the SBLive to function in DOS it must have Expanded memory enabled.
OR
RECOMMENDED: 4.) Choose to boot into Windows 98SE to play your MS-DOS games that were later revised to work in Windows. (Decent, POD GOLD ect...)I NEED FULL POWER TO PLAY MY LATE 1990's Window PC GAMES:
Prerequisite: If you are still configured to boot into MS-DOS you must exit out of it so that you can return to Windows 98SE. Just type the word exit at the c:\ prompt then press enter. Now you may proceed to step 1 below.
1.) With the computer turned OFF flip the TURBO switch upward to engage the turbo mode (100Mhz FSB) then turn the computer on and during post when prompted press the Ctrl-Alt-Esc keys together to enter the BIOS. From the main screen press the F8 key and scroll down to the Advanced Options tab and click on it. Make sure both the L1 and L2 caches are enabled then save your changes on exit and let the computer boot into Windows 98SE. You now have the equivalent CPU processing power of a Pentium 3 450 MHz processor. If you need even more processing power this motherboard will support much faster Celeron or Pentium 3 processors up to 1100 MHz. If you are seriously considering this option then you will want to invest in an Nvidia GeForce 2 MX400 64meg (128bit) PCI video card that can take full advantage of this kind of processing power more so than the Voodoo 3 2000 that is currently installed in this Desktop computer.
NOTE: This listing is for the desktop computer itself plus the original Pentium 3 650Mhz processor and the remote control for the Live Drive. Any other items caught by the camera are not included in this listing. Examples: Monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, joystick, USB stick, etc....( The PC games 688 Attack Sub, Chuck Yeager Air Combat, POD Gold and Wings of Fury will be left on the hard drive, not shown in the pictures but will be included is a blue colored 40 CD-ROM holder zipper case that will contain the POD Gold CD, ACER-CPR CD and the bootable HDClone 4.0 Pro CD)
DUE TO THE AGE OF THIS HARDWARE I CANNOT ACCEPT RETURNS. I HOPE YOU UNDESTAND.
