The Toshiba Libretto product line is one of the most iconic chapters in the history of mobile technology. The name comes from the Italian word libretto (little book), which accurately described the main goal of the engineers – to create a full-fledged computer with the Windows operating system that fits in the palm of your hand and weighs less than one kilogram.
History of this unique line of subnotebooks and UMPCs (Ultra-Mobile PCs)
1. The first generation and the boom in the 90s (1996 – 1999)
In the 90s, portable computers were still massive and heavy “bricks”. In 1996, Toshiba shocked the technology world when it introduced a device that offered the desktop x86 architecture in the body of a pocket notebook.
Libretto 20 and 30 (1996): The very first models released exclusively for the Japanese market. They were powered by AMD 486DX4 processors and had only 8 MB of RAM.
Libretto 50CT and 70CT (1997): These models brought worldwide success and made the brand famous globally. They switched to full-fledged Intel Pentium processors and later Pentium MMX
Libretto 100CT / 110CT (1998): Slightly larger versions with a 7.1-inch display and a more powerful Pentium 166 MHz processor, which could easily replace a work laptop on the go.
Devices from this era did not have an integrated floppy drive or CD-ROM, external drives were connected to them via a special PCMCIA port or docking stations. The mouse was solved by an ingenious miniature trackball located on the right side of the display (the click buttons were on the back of the lid).
