I am using the Censor function to help block spam. A general URL detection function and some form of whitelist would work much better, but since that isn't available AFAIK, I'm using what is.
Blocking a couple dozen phone numbers this way (along with disabling UBBCode and requiring a captcha per post, etc) worked great to get rid of a persistent astrology spammer. The problem is that there are infinite web sites, so blocking ones used for spamming causes a problem with editing long posts, so that over a certain length they time out with the error:
Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /home/2/4/1/1026/1026/public_html/forums/libs/html.inc.php on line 801
Rather than increase the time limit, if that is configurable, I would like to just enable the Censor function for new users, but don't see any way to do that (or anything equivalent). .

The censor feature is all or none in stock code. But reading your prior posts the stop forum spam when working correctly would benefit you probably most.
GIZMO was the author of that feature and it was improved on in the current release 7.5.9. There are also settings for post moderation for x number of posts then they are promoted to a group that is not moderated.

Building on Ruben's post, there is a feature that was added in 7.5.8 called " Stop Forum Spam", which has a modification at UBBDev which detects users when they try to login. This feature checks users against the database at Stop Forum Spam, additionally you can submit users to their collective by signing up for an API key (covered at the wiki link above).

The censor feature is all or none in stock code. That's what I figured. I do have restrictions on new user accounts, but would rather not have to resort to moderating posts for the sake of usually only 2 or 3 spam posts per day. .

If you can get Stop Forum Spam configured and working properly, it should take care of the majority of drive by spammers you receive; we used to get hundreds per week until I wrote the modification (which lead to the feature).
