First off, this is version 6.3.1.1 of UBB.Classic.
Anyway, we rely heavily on post/reply notifications. They pretty much are problem free with one exception:
A user posts in a password protected forum. Someone replies and the user gets the notification. The user then follows the link in the notification and performs authentication including the password. The board reports that the post doesn't exist.
This does not occur on non-password protected boards. This behavior does not occur for Administrators (can follow same link in email from user reporting the issue and it goes right in).
I've made sure it wasn't something silly like cookies being off, post actually being moved, delete, etc and none of these are the case. It truly is an issue.
