This was fixed early in 6.7.0 development.

In short, all forums are now really sorted by date internally. Alpha sorted forums just have an additional index used ONLY when looking at the list of topics.

This allows for the proper sorting behavior without breaking the way a lot of the other functions work. This also means that alpha sorted forums can now be pruned, be the source of mass moves, and be the source of content islands.
