I do move inappropriate posts to an area accessible only to moderators rather than deleting them, so that I have a record of what was in the post that justified it being removed from the forum, but if the people want to keep fighting I tell them that they can take it to private messages.
A feature that would automatically PM the people who had posted in the thread with notification that the thread was being moved/removed with a moderator supplied reason would be nice.
