I guess I've found with databases that the database gets all "jumbled" internally after a while, and when you do a full export and re-import, that everything lays out smooth and in order on the disk and suddenly things run much more quickly. So for me it's a worthwhile thing to do every once in a while.

We're still getting the crashes of IIS/FTP/SMTP every 1/2 hr or so, so MySQL5 didn't fix the problem, but at least we're narrowing down the culprits smile

To see what I'm facing, the server rebooted at 9:15am today. Since then, these are the times of the "crash quad" of IIS/FTP/SMTP/IISA:

10:11
10:43
11:16
11:40
11:41
12:38
12:38
1:10
2:15
3:39
3:41
3:42
3:43

so eventually it's going to crash again, once these rack up enough.
