i've done it a different way.
1. i have my 'news forums' feeding the portal page.
2. i created one forum that has only ONE post in it.
3. the forum is only writeable by admin, readable by all.
4. that post is pure html and is essentially, the custom insert with images and all that.
5. i order the custom insert forum first, so it always appears 1st.
so no coding req'd.
