you are correct. dosearch.inc.php only makes sure that if it's not set, that is is defaulted to 3 and then it's not used

i verified for 7.2.2 and 7.3

as for FULLTEXT indices, i guess it's nice you verified.. but i think i indicated they were there.. maybe not
