I went through this years ago, tried working with AOL as its an issue with how they do things, I don't remember the specifics. I wound up having to block any new registrants with aol email addresses. I have a message up when creating an account along with an error message if they try.
In one night AOL blasted around 1100 rejected emails to my server and that was it for new users using aol.
