It breaks to allow it to wrap, so that it doesn't stretch out the chat. What makes it do it? The <wbr> tag is inserted after so many characters which makes tells the browser that it's "ok" to break there.
I get that it breaks to allow it to wrap, but it didn't seem to have any rhyme or reason to it that I could see.
with the IE example it goes about 60 characters before it decides it's ok to break. I figured it would either break within the constraints of the container or not at all.
The Chrome example, I thought looked like was breaking inconsistently, but now that I look more closely I see there are similar #s of characters in each line.
