I can't for the life of me see why.
See if you have the following two items both checked:

Only Show Left Column On The Portal

Only Show Right Column On The Portal
I did this myself once and broke the site.
When you say activated they should be off if you want both left and right to display.
I think this was fixed in a newer version.

There is nothing special except for say:

Forums To Pull News From
Or
Portal Cache Settings

Maybe you have a bad post in a forum you are pulling from
or your cache time is corrupted to like 0 minutes.
