If you are in version 5.x there is an option to turn this off in the config settings under Admin.
If you are in 6, this is not an on/off option. I believe this was done to keep the code as powerful as possible.
But, since everything is template based, it's fairly easy to edit the column out. Here is a link to instructions to get rid of the mod column at
