When a thread has an unread post inside of it there will be a yellow arrow next to the subject of that thread on the postlist screen. Clicking on the yellow arrow will take you to the first unread post. Clicking on the subject iself will take you to the first post in the thread. If you click on the subject by accident and it has new posts then in the upper left side there will be a link that says "Jump to first unread post" which you can use as well.
