I was wondering what the administrator actually can see about the posters.

What can the administrator use the IP address for when trying to track down a user and what kind of information do the administrator get (name, address)?

The IP address will allow you to use something like nslookup or Geektools or SamSpade to look up the hostname and then from there the owner fo the IP address. While you probably will not get the telephone number of the person that posted you should be able to get the phone number of their internet connection easily enough.

How is that possible with dynamic IP-addresses?

That would mean that each time a dynamic IP-address changes, a record of the associated telephone line should be kept somewhere - or what? And where if so?

Millennium Crew, if this is a reply to my post then I still don't get it. How can you easily enough get the phone number of their internet connection, with dynamic IP?

And now, a mini-tutorial in finding an ISP.

First things first, it really helps if you have Sam Spade - you can grab it from samspade.org. You can use the web version, if you can figure out how. It's just a bit confusing.

Let's take an IP. Say, 193.253.232.18. We want to find out who owns that IP. First, we perform a hostname lookup. We get APuteaux-102-1-3-18.abo.wanadoo.fr Okey, now we can go tothe wanadoo.fr website and pray that they have a phone number listed. If not, we can perform a whois on the domain name - phone information is often listed there. If it's not, then phone information is surely listed in the IP Block ownership listing... And there ya go!

PA I do not mean the telephone number that they dial their modem into, I mean the phone number for the company contact, their offices, support line.. something like that.

Ok, as I understand you are able to find the internet service provider and then you have to get them to look up the which one of their customers had that particular IP at the time. If this is correct, are they obliged to hand out that kind of information? And for how long will they store that information?

They are not obliged to give you any information - if you can provide them with exact times and dates, however, they should be able to locate the user and tell him to knock it off, if he is indeed violating their terms of service...
