By all accounts, this is supposed to be really easy to do but the first time I tried it (which was so long ago I can barely remember what I did), I deleted the entire thread in error.

Can anyone give me detailed directions on how to lock down a thread?

When viewing a thread you will see below the last post in the thread a line that starts with Administrative Options. Click on the close thread, then submit your username and password and that's it. If all you click is the Close Thread link then there is no way you will delete the topic.

I see that option here on these boards, but our boards are set not to display those options. Is there any way to lock down a thread via the control panel?

There is no built-in way to do that. There is a wonderful add-on, the Carnell Utilities that will allow many admin functions that are not yet in UBB. The link above will take you to a description of it and a link to download the utility. The link to the zip file is at the bottom of the long initial post by Ron.
