This is a problem that I've had for quite some time, even after various re-installs of my server software and OS. In fact, I believe I've had this problem since just after the UBB accelerator was introduced. But enough jibba-jabba, onto the problem.
Notice the "Recent Visitors" table. If this page has been served by the UBB accelerator, then odds are pretty good that the colors and font sizes on the table aren't what they should be... and it's obvious. This also makes the links on the table un-workable. Whenever you click on it, you get a URL like this:
If you were to have a stock UBB instance without your changes to the templates are you able to duplicate it. If you are, then there is a bug, if not it is either your Javascript menu or the multiple includes of an external css. I counted at least 2.
I'm running a stock UBB without any external CSS and I'm not experiencing the behavior at all, so it leads me to believe that one of your changes is causing the behavior.
One of our beta testers has encountered this before. Current operating theory is that PHP thinks it needs to escape all those quotes because "magic quotes" is enabled.
Carmack, please open a support ticket. Include the URL to this topic in the ticket body, along with a request that the ticket be assigned to me. I'd like to run some tests on your server.
Turning off "magic quotes runtime" in PHP.ini fixed it, so I'm guessing the theory is correct.
Considering that the problem is fixed, I'd really rather not open the support ticket... don't want to get charged for a service I don't need. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> However, if you want to run some tests on my server for research (or other) purposes, then that's totally fine. If that's the case, just email me at [][email protected][/] and I'll give you the info you need.
I really need to catch this bug in the wild - I would really appreciate it if you could reset php.ini and open that support ticket so I can figure out if I can make the Accelerator disable magic quotes internally. Most people won't be able to change their own server configuration. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
That's the theory. However, depending on which page of the PHP documentation you read, that may or may not work. Either magic quotes can't be disabled during runtime, or they can. I have yet to duplicate any of these problems locally to test for myself. And knowing how flaky PHP versions are, it's probably changed four or five times in the last four or five releases.
I think the issue with changing the status of magic quotes may be that you might not be able to activate them at runtime if they're not already activated in PHP.ini (versus turning them off at runtime when they're on by default). Is that the contradiction you've seen in the documentation, or did it just pretty blatantly say one thing somewhere and exactly the opposite somewhere else (I'd believe either... they go through versions very quickly)?
Adding the set_magic_quotes_runtime(0); function at the beginning of the script fixed the problem as well, by the way (I've removed it now so that you may run whatever tests you need to on an unaltered board).
