I've just installed UBB.classic 6.7.2, and I'm having difficulty in getting the "New Posts Since Last Login" indicators on the Forum Summary page.

The symptoms that I see is that when I log into the board, all the New Post indicators are lit up. After I go into a topic, all of the New Post indicators go dim.

Having looked at the cookies, I can see that the login cookie remains after logging out, the ubber cookie is cleared, and the sesion cookie being cleared.

On login, the login cookie isn't changed and the session cookie isn't set until the user goes into a forum or accesses another part of the board.

Am I doing something wrong, or is it a known problem?

The login/session cookie pair is the one that controls the new post indicators. The login cookie persists, while the session cookie will expire when you close your browser. The login cookie will update when the session cookie is set.

The ubber cookie is used for authentication. It should persist if you choose the "Remember Me" option when logging in.

When you log out, the session cookie and ubber cookie are cleared.

The problems you're seeing are likely related to the logout. To avoid that problem, don't log out. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The cookies are working as intended. This is not a bug.

Hmmm...so the lightbulbs only work if the user never logs out.

Some of our UBBs are used commercially, and we currently encourage our users to log out each time to prevent unauthorised access to their accounts.

To continue this practice, is there an official method of allowing the users to log out and still have use of the lightbulbs to indicate new posts since they last logged in, or should I start looking/creating a hack?

Either encourage them not to use the Remember Me checkbox so they're automatically logged out at the end of their browser session, or make that choice for them via a small code change.

There's a hard-coded setting in ubb_lib.cgi around line 105, "RememberMeByDefault". Change it to "nohidden" from the current setting of "yes" to hide the checkbox and disable Remember Me entirely. Note that this won't log out anyone that's currently logged in. You can also change it to "no" instead of "nohidden" to show the box, but have it unchecked instead of checked.
