what do I look for if I want to change the align in the message area to left? what template file and what code?

Each template corresponds to the name of the php file you are using. For example to edit this thread if you look at the address bar of your browser you'll find that the script called is showflat.php therefore template you need is showflat.tmpl

Are you trying for align=left in te display of your posts, or are you trying to get the text to go right to left?

for the RTL you'll want the language editor, then generic.php, then change READ_DIRECTION from ltr to rtl.
