i want to set up a simple forum page without any visible "embellishments" at all; just the message topic, message/s, and a "new post" text box.
i know it's probably got something to do with the templates directory, but i can't find much documentation, and the search function on this forum at the moment only displays blank messages.
can anyone help? or at least tell me if what i am wanting to do is possible using ubb?

You can turn off most features from the control panel

thanks allen. the problem with turning off features from the control panel is that *all* forums are affected, not just one. i want to make a few forums that look more like blogs than forums.

Well, if you're going that route, you could install the UBB.C addon "UBBNews" (php version) and set that up to relay it as blogs on your main site...
