we decided to switch to sessions, because there's still a lot of people who can't access our forums because firewalls and browser settings don't let them.

on the other hand, experienced users are pissed off now, because they don't STAY logged in overnight.

my suggestion: a third tracking option, sessions AND cookies.
initial setting for any user would be sessions, but you could switch to cookies with a "remember me" button. if the cookie doesn't get through - back to sessions!

is this possible?

I've seen that requested before.

There was a lengthy discussion here at threadsdev which you might be interested in, on the possibilities of offering the end users the option to use sessions *or* cookies.

But I think they determined that modifications to do that would be extensive...which make it a great feature request. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />

meanwhile I've seen another software, which included a "tracking fallback".
It didn't let the user specify which tracking method to use (very good, because most users I had to deal with didn't even know what a "browser" is).
First the software tried to set and read a cookie, if the read failed, the session ID was automatically used within the url -
this way users with "low" security, accepting cookies, could *stay* logged in if they wanted to, and paranoid people with strange browser preferences or even stranger browsers would get in, too.

a fallback option seems quite nice to me, though it reduces the chances of shutting out users AND less support-work for me <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
