Speaking on behalf of the users at the AnimeonDVD.com forums, we SERIOUSLY want to be able to view threads nested instead of flat or threaded. The 6.4.1 revision doesn't work the nested tweak the admins put in, and now us poor users are all freaking out. The owner said there was nothing he could do, so we should come here and make the request.

I am but the first. More will surely come. And lets face it, otaku united in a common goal is a scary thing. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

I personally would also like to see nested view become a standard option. It combines the best of both views, and allows the threading structure to be intact while still seeing all of the posts at once like flat. We would greatly appreciate it if this could possibly be added. Thank you!

I'm sure other's don't know either...

But what is a "nested view"?
You might want to give an example here. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Nested view is where all the posts are shown, in a threaded-style arrangement. Nested view is not a good option for long threads because all the posts are shown open in a threaded-style arrangement, where you cannot use page numbers. Also you will need to do a lot of scrolling.

Also Josh, have you seen these images in the attachments?

Nested view: All messages are displayed (as in flat view, All), but rather than being ordered by posting date/time, they are ordered by thread (as in threaded view). Further, individual messages are indented in the same manner that the message list is indented in threaded view, which provides visual context for the reader.

It is far more efficient to have an entire message thread (or a large subsection, in the case of a paged view) available to read at a given time since, for the most part, individual messages tend to be short, and take less time to read than it takes to load a new threaded view. Threaded view is in general just an annoyance because of the need to constantly reload the thread view. It is only useful for long threads with few new replies.

Because individual conversations within a single thread can diverge, a flat view is problematic in terms of trying to maintain the conversational context. This leads to problems of over-quoting, and increased redundant bandwidth usage. It also means that a failure to over-quote leaves you searching for past message references when you want to put a reply in context. Finally, it means that, in avoidance of both of those issues, people will tend to either reply to the first post in a sub-thread rather than read through and find whether the topic has already been responded to, or ignore the earlier parts of the sub-thread because it's too difficult to group and read the information together.

Example: The forum software that AnimeOnDVD.com used before moving to UBB was DCScripts. Here's a thread from their support forum that shows how nested view looks: DC Scripts forum thread

Note: there's a View in Linear Mode / View in Threaded Mode link near the top of the page that may need to be toggled. It also may not be the best example, since most of the threads there tend to be pretty linear (as might be expected in a support forum), but it should at least show what it looks like.

Pink Jazz says that lack of page number and lots of scrolling are drawbacks for this mode. Personally, I'd rather have lots of scrolling than lots of clicking, and the lack of page numbers is something I actually prefer. I find threaded and flat views to be clumsy and awkward to use in any but the simplest of conversational threads.

In general, lack of a nested view has been the single biggest gripe people on AOD.com have had since the changeover (from what I've seen, anyway). A home-brewed hack that put it back in the previous version of UBB busted with the latest upgrade. I and many others would greatly appreciate it if it were added to the core code.

My biggest gripe with nested view is not the lack of page numbers, but loading time. Last time I visited AOD, nested view loaded slowly for me (I was on dialup then). It may be possible for Rick to make a speedier version.

Also, I would like to see a hybrid view like in vBulletin 3.

I can see how load time would be problematic in some cases. For me, a combination of tabbed browsing and broadband make loadtime inconsequential. Regardless, if it's a problem, users can opt for one of the other modes. We're just asking for the option to also have nested view.

I too would like to nested view to be a supported feature. I miss it so much <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />.

I find neither thread ot flat mode to my liking. In threaded mode I end up clicking over a hundred times in large threads. Then scrolling down to find the next thread I want to read. Where as in flat mode I tend to get lost in quotes and side conversations that make no sense without reading what the post is refering to.

Nested view solves both of those problems for me and if people don't like it the can always turn it off.

As above, i'd also like to put in my two cents for an official version of it. The modification that we had done for it worked well up through 6.3.2 but there were so many changes to how things worked between that version and 6.4.1 that it became completely unusable (to the point of literally eating the server up).
