I'm following every piece of instructional material to the word, and yet I still can't get this software to install.

It is now doing my head in.

The support on Groupee don't seem to be replying to my questions and I really don't know where else to turn. I'm pleading for some help and hope that someone on here can assist.

I recently transferred our site to a new server. I backed up EVERYTHING from the old server because Groupee support wouldn't confirm which files I should back-up.

When I upload the files onto the new server, as described in the installation document, and go to http://www.tradmusic.com/cgi-bin/cp.cgi I am presented with a strange screen asking for the variables path.

I have entered at least 10 different combinations of path, which I have received from my ISP, I've also used the pathto.asp file to find out what my path is, but each time I enter it I am presented with the following error message:

"The submitted path does not appear to be absolute (starting with a Windows drive letter or a forward slash)"

What am I doing wrong? Going spare here.
Nath.

As much as I hate to say this, I think your host might be trying to do something that UBBClassic isn't capable of handling. I'll have to let Charles chime in on this, but if I'm not mistaken, running classic via a Network path is not a support configuration

I snagged the following from your URL
Quote
PATH_TRANSLATED \nas23entdomainsttradmusic.comuserhtdocscgi-bincp.cgi
As you can tell, that is a Network path at your webhost. Tell them to map it to a Drive Letter. If it were t:userhtdocscgi-bin it should work fine.

Hi again,

But my host is saying that if they do that, it would mean removing the load balancing from the site, which I would like to keep.

Does this mean that I simply can't use UBB.classic now, because I just renewed my license, which I wished I'd held off on!

Thanks for the replies...been waiting for hours!

Regards
Nath.

I'm sorry about the wait. Charles Capps is the UBB.classic developer, and he would be the one that would be able to give you the best answer for your situation. Unfortunately, I don't usually see him appear on the forums until I'm home from work in the evenings. I don't have any experience running classic in a load balanced environment.

No problem Ron.

I guess I'll just have to hope that Charles posts a reply tonight. I did read in one of his other replies, that he recommends UBB.threads in a load balanced environment, although I don't understand the technicalities of why.

Does the license upgrade include access to the threads software? I just paid $99.00 for support for a year, to find out that my server won't work with UBB, so I can't really afford the $200+ for the UBB.threads basic software.

Thanks for helping out Ron. I really appreciate it.

I'm guessing that the major reason would be that classic uses flatfiles to store data, where UBB.threads, and the New yet-to-be-named product both use MySQL to store data.

I've answered your query about the UBB.threads conversion in your other thread

Hi again Ron.

So where does that leave me? Will UBB.threads work on a server with load balancing?

Can I transfer my design, member data and posts from UBB.classic into UBB.threads?

Thanks
Nath.

You can not run UBB.classic directly off a Windows share. The share would need to be mapped to a drive letter on the machine in order to make the path work properly. This is not directly a UBB.classic limitation, but a limit of addressability of shares from Perl. (Windows won't let Perl open a share directly, but has no problems letting it access the share when mapped to a drive letter.)

In addition to this, running UBB.classic over any sort of networked filesystem is completely unsupported due to generally poor or missing file locking support. It's possible that it will work, but we can't support you if problems occur.

You were told this very clearly this morning in your support ticket.

While normally I would advise the use of UBB.threads in a load balanced environment, you're also on Windows, which is not exactly the optimium operating environment for PHP or MySQL.

At this time, I would advise that you ask your host if they have any servers available that are not load balanced, or at the very minimum, if they can map the share to a drive for you.

Charles can you explain when, and where, I was told this in my support ticket?

The only person who hinted that UBB.classic might not run on a load balanced server was Ron M on this forum.

Considering that I have just purchased $99 of support for a product that doesn't work on a load balanced Windows server (which isn't mentioned when purchasing the software), will I be entitled to a refund?

It looks like I will have to consider a completely different solution as neither UBB.classic or UBB.threads will work on a load balanced Windows server.

Very disappointing.

Regarding a refund on the Member's Area access, you would need to ask that via your support ticket.

Another option for you to consider would be to switch to Groupee Community, which is a hosted application (run on Groupee's Servers). You would not have to worry about maintaining the application, and the servers are optimized to run the application.

There is a special running for classic/threads users that want to switch. You can find more information about it at http://www.groupee.com/features/ and a live Groupee community board can be found at http://community.groupee.com .

Hello Nath,

Kate said, in your ticket:
Quote
It looks like this machine is running on an SMB Mount, which means that the we're not even installing the software on the same machine that it's trying to configure it on. The board won't run in this environment, and in the off chance that you could get it to run (and I wasn't able to), it would be unsupported as there's no way we can ensure data integrity.
