I'm new at this whole ubb thing. I did everything according to the instructions that came with the ubb6 demo. I created a cgi bin for the cgi scripts, put all the non cgi scripts in the ubb folder as was instructed, everything seemded to be ok. Then I did the ubb6_test.cgi thingie and it showed up. Checked permission to write new files in this directory, that seemed to be ok, checked for the 'required' files in both the CGI and this directory, that was ok too, checked my read/write permissions on all the variables files, that wasn't write, but I figured out how to change it to 777, then I checked my absolute paths in general settings if available, and that where I got screwed up. This is what I got:

Path: Path exists and is a directory: OK

CGI Directory Path: has not been defined sucessfully in the control panel

NonCGI Directory Path: has not been defined sucessfully in the control panel

Members Directory Path: has not been defined sucessfully in the control panel

Variables Directory Path: has not been defined sucessfully in the control panel

Now I have no clue what to do. I tried all the solutions it gave me when I clicked the help link. I went to the cp.cgi file and maded sure the paths were right. But it still didn't work. I really have no clue what I am supposed to do. If someone could help me I would appreciate the help more then you will ever know. I was hoping I wouldn't need to get help. I wantd to do this by myself, but that ain't gonna happen. So please someone help me!

Thank you in advance
Johnnie

Ok your noncgi folder (ubb) does not have proper permissions. Go in and change that folder to 777. You did not change it correctly.

ok now there seems to be abit of a prob. after posting a new topic i try to view it and I get a pop up message saying:

The document contained no data.
Try again later, or contact the server's administrator.

Does this have anything to do with ubb or is it a server problem. I'm freaking out here. Or mabye it's just me, and it hates me. the boards are at: http://www.johnbanks.ca/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi

johnnie

P.S.
I wonder does Slurpee Banks sound ok to you?

Re-upload all your templates in ASCII, see if that fixes it. Your permissions maybe off somewhere as well.

should the templates still be .pl ? And I'm gonna sound stupid here, how would i fix the permissions if that's what the prob is?

Yes, DO NOT CHANGE THE TEMPLATE NAMES. They should be uploaded as ASCII files, NOT binary. You do not need to set permissions on them, but check all the permissions in the cgi-bin files and make sure your Forum directories are set to 777 as well.

Ok I checked that they were all 777. I made sure the forum directories were 777. I did everything, but it still won't let me view them. I'm so lost.

Do you have the cache feature on or off? Is there a cache directory created?

Yes you should have a cache directory, it's in your noncgi folder.

You should have only one...but whatever. Check in them and see if ubb_files and then then the Forum directories and see if there are files being created inside of them.

I'm also gonna move this post to PIT V6 forum so that Charles will see and can assist as well, as this isn't an install issue anymore. Continue discussion there.

I need another drink. Please someone here my s.o.s.

Ouch, you're using the demo.

Is the board operating normally now, even with the two cache directories?

BTW... pipes in the forum name are BAD. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Is using the demo bad? I thought I'd use it to see if I could do it, which obviously I can't. The problem is that I can't view the posts. I can and new topics but I can't view the posts. So I have no idea if it's because of the two cache thingies or what. And what are pipes? And whya re they bad in the forum name? Do I have pipes in my forum names. OH god I need another drink. Make it a double bartender...

Ok this is weird. I have to sites, thank the gods, and I installed ubb on my other one this time knowing a bit more of what I should do, and so far it's working. I can view the posts and reply to them. I signed in as two different users to see if that was a problem. No probs. Also i noticed that now there is only one cache in this one. Where on the other site there are two. So maybe i should just start from scratch on the other one and see if that works then. What do you thnk i should do.

Ok I think I know kinda what has happened. I decided to change the name of my board this morning. After doing that I could no longer view messages again. That's what happened with johnbanks.ca I changed the board name cuz I wanted to match the rest of the future site. But after changing it I could know longer view messages. Now is that suppose to happen? Cuz what if I redesign the site in the future and I want the board to go with the rest of it. Will I have to keeo it the same? The new board which I'll be putting up again is at www.tv3.ca/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi

welll i re-did all the uploading and know I've come across a new prob. I get a 500 error thing. it says:

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might
have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

How do I check this error log thing. And what file and directorys have to be 777 and what has to be 755? I want to make sure I have it correct. And what do I not touch?

Okay.. PLEASE slow down. You're doing too much before ensuring that what you're doing is indeed the right thing to do. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

If you donm't know what mod_perl is, then you aren't running it, so you shouldn't try to do anything to your board. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Which one of the boards is causing the 500 ISE?

It's the www.tv3.ca/cgi-bin/ubb6_test.cgi

I moved the board there. seeing as that's probably where I keep it, if it ever works properly. By the way congrats on the becoming part of the team at infopop. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Ugh. Okay.. Open up a support ticket - submit it as a general question. Include your FTP login information and the URL to this thread. We'll want to see what's going wrong.

Yes - submit it as a Question rather than a Malfunction, that way it will allow you to go through without a license.
