I have a Mac user on my board who uses AOL. He reports that the instant graemlins and instant UBB code do not work for him, and he's tried on more than one of his computers. He says the problem only cropped up starting with UBB v.6.2.0, and he reports that he is also a member of another board that is still using v.6.1.0.3 and the instant codes work fine there. And he also says that the instant codes work fine for him in IE on Mac, so the problem is probably something with the AOL/Mac combination.

I am a complete ignoramus about both Macs and AOL, but if somebody can figure this out, I will be ever so grateful. This guy is one of our favorite members and I want to keep him happy.

My board is at http://fourfatchicks.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi, no UBB accelerator, v.6.2.1. Thanks.

Do you know what I.E. version he's using? The latest version from Mactopia.com is version 5.1. Our local installation of both 5.0 and 5.1 works well with the UBB, we haven't seen anything that would cause this. However, you may want to check to see if his browser isn't rendering JavaScript correctly. He may have to upgrade or re-install the browser. The only difference with our Mac browsers here is that we're not using AOL.

Have the user visit AOL Keyword: BROWSER.

That keyword will display exactly what version web browser they are using, and if an update is available it will automatically prompt them to update and easily take them through the process.

FWIW, AOL for MAC lags the AOL for Windows versions greatly and there are many known Java script issues with the AOL for MAC versions in general.

Okay, here's the response from the user:

"I'm using AOL 5.0 & using the Keyword "browser" in AOL indicates that the "built-in" browser is IE 4.01. I do have IE 5.1, but it's not built in to AOL."

I don't know if this will help narrow down the problem any, but better too much info than not enough, right? My site primarily consists of adventure game reviews, and we use a Dreamweaver extension that writes Javascript to pop up the bigger screenshots when the thumbnail is clicked. I had him try that and he said it works just fine for him. An example review page is http://www.fourfatchicks.com/Reviews/Anachronox/Anachronox.shtml if you would like to look at the source code. I don't know anything about Javascript or whether one kind, this Dreamweaver extension, would work for this user and another, the UBB instant codes, would not.

Thanks again.

Another thought: The 6.2 release seems to mark the dividing line between the codes working and not working for this user. That's also when the script was changed to allow inserting the codes into the middle of the text instead of always at the end, right? Do you suppose that might have something to do with it?

The changed code MIGHT make an impact.

It would be useful if we could get an error message.....

Here's his response:

"Jen - No error messages. When I click on a graemlin, nothing appears in the msg box. When I clik on a UBB code, the box asking me what I want to format comes up but, if I enter something, nothing appears in the msg."

Does he see anything in the browser status bar? In particular, something similar to "Error on Page"?

Geez, I feel like the meat in a sandwich <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Here's his reply:

"Jen - No error messages, but the status box at the bottom of the screen shows "Link: javascript:void(0)" when cursor is placed over any of the graemlins & "Link: javascript:x()" when cuirsor is placed over any of the UBB codes."

Both of those are perfectly normal...

I'm simply going to blame this on AOL's IE implementation...
