If so, is your CPU usage going through the
roof? I have been locked out by my host. Data
transfer has ballooned to ~80GB/month. Pics
are extremely limited and scarce, boards are
being purged routinely, UBB version 6 just
becomes exponentially inefficient as the
board grows. Who else is in this position??

We have 20,000 members here...

Moving to UBB6 PIT for further followups.

Please post the version and URL to your board....

I believe it was 6.04e

The URL to the board is: http://www.v6power.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi
but its dead now.

we have >10,000 members...

# of members is immaterial, it's all in the activity those members add to your site. If 10% of your registered members post more than once a week you are doing well... <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

An active 150 members could do more damage than a slow group of 20,000 members...

To answer your question, we aren't having cpu problems, tho we have a nice server with scsi hd's and a decent amt of ram.

Are you experiencing excessive data transfer?

sorry, haven't monitored that... the isp hasn't been complaining, so I guess we're ok...

Pictures+Text+HTML+JAVA,Etc.. = Bandwidth

CGI/PERL, etc = Processor Time or I/O time

Which do you mean?
As for a busy ubb, check out Jason's site..

Well our data transfer got pretty high but
we were shut down because of excessive CPU
usage. I dont want to ask if anyone knows
of another BB system that is more efficient
but I would like some work to be done to try
to make UBB more efficient. I understand the
marketing aspect, I'm a programmer myself
and management wants bells and whistles
instead of raw performance but to support
big websites, UBB needs to scale up to the
higher demand. IMO.

UBB scales as well as the server allows it to - right now, the UBB bottleneck is in the I/O. If the UBB can not get to the data files it requires fast enough, it will begin to slow things down. What looks like too much CPU use is in reality too much I/O. We're taking measures to reduce the UBB's I/O dependance in future releases.

In the mean time, please ask your host for some stats on their server - i.e. what OS, processor, memory, I/O subsystem they're using... I'd like to know.

I don't know where this puts us in the overall scheme of things, but I upgraded OUR BOARD to 6.05 just over a week ago and the control panel is reporting 237,109 page views. That is about 60% of our page views on our site as a whole (the UBB number compared to the NetTracker daily average). We have 3,500 registered users, but only a few hundred post with any regularity. Our whole site averages about 2.5 GB per day, and I would suspect that about half of that is UBB traffic (per the page view numbers, above).

Of course, we are on a non-trivial server: a dell PowerEdge 4300 dual P-III/600s with half a gig of RAM and a high-speed SCSI RAID running Red Hat Linux 7.1 (or thereabouts... much customization goes on "behind the scenes").

Yes, since we have lots of disk space and limited CPU bandwidth, I would have preferred to see the UBB architecture stick to the 5.x model of generating the HTML files when a page was updated. Generating CGI "on the fly" does have its drawbacks in terms of server load. However, we are headed in that direction for the rest of our site (some sort of PHP-based "content management system" is actively being researched).

Anyway, there may well be an installation issue at work here, as I do recall having a CPU-loading issue in the 5.4x series someplace when I upgraded (and then upgraded again, not too much later). It had something to do with overloading the script that translated Graemlins to text and vice-versa when a page was edited. (We have a user who would try to use as many Graemlins as possible, and her posts would actually cause the service to time out.)

Anyway, do you have any "hacks" installed that might not be so compatible with the rest of the code? Are you doing anything else weird in your configuration that might cause the CPU-load issues to crop up? Or are you just running this on an old Pentium-90 with 16 MB of RAM and are wondering why you are having difficulties serving up traffic? <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

One simple thing to reduce bandwidth that I forget sometimes is to decrease the number of posts per page... your users are more likely to click on just the pages they need (containing fewer posts = smaller file size) rather than loading fewer but larger pages...

so, how many of the sites mentioned here are using mod_perl apache.

Charles,
I have a client who wants to upgrade to UBB 6.05. His v5.x bbs most definitely has performance problems on a Cobalt Raq4 with 256MB RAM and a 400mhz chip, no RAID.

Seeing that you are pointing to I/O as the main issue here, could you just tell me in general whether you think v6 is going to hurt performance on a system that is already max'd out.

My advice to him was that mod_perl should provide a *significant* performance boost. Without mod_perl, I am of the opinion the server won't be able to handle to upgrade.

Please stop me-tooing into every thread - it's rather counterproductive. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

RaQs provide poor I/O performance, regardless of the model or configuration (their >$4000 system with a RAID is a complete joke...). mod_perl will not help that in the least... In fact, if anything, it will make the problem WORSE by consuming memory. We do not advise running the UBB on RaQs, unless it's going to be a somewhat small / infrequently used board.

If a board has grown large enough to warrant a dedicated server, going with an indigo pizza box w/ slow IDE drives is nothing short of suicide. A genuine, real server is required. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
