Have you read this thread?

http://community.infopop.net/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=729094322&f=3913070413&m=1643073923

Is there any chance you could lend some of your expertise? Let me breifly explain the problem.

Upgraded board to 6.1.0.2 and all worked fine.

Added the Who's Online and Avatar hacks from Qasic, which worked fine. When I added the Custom Titles/Ranks hack (and I used Qasic's auto installer to do them), it caused my board to immediately lose track of any users. I couldn't log into the control panel or do anything because it didn't recognize me.

I told InfoPop about the problem and they suggested I delete all the *.cgi files in the CGI-BIN and start with fresh copies. I was fine with that except that it didn't work. Now I want to go back to just a standard copy of UBB without any hacks but when I try and set the paths in initial setup of cp.cgi, it just goes in an endless loop, never allowing me to get to the login.

I think that if that is fixed I will still not be able to log in because even though the member files are in tact, it still wont' recognize me.

What is your (or anyone else's) opinon?

My opinion?

If you ever hack your board again, I will hurt you. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Okay... first off, whoever told you to nuke the .cgi files is probably right on.

Delete the cp_* files, the ubb_* files, the vars_* files, cp.cgi and ultimatebb.cgi.

Delete your Templates directory.

Delete anything in your Members directory that isn't a directory or a file ending in .cgi.

Make a clean, fresh, new install straight from the 6.1.0.2 zip file.

Make sure the Members directory has the member_test.cgi file and the last_number.cgi file.

Make sure all the files that the zip has in the noncgi directory really are there.

That should avoid the cp.cgi login loop.

Hey, I don't see a member_test.cgi file in the members directory. Would that be causing the problem with the loop? Otherwise I did what you said to no avail.

Also, there are a CRAP LOAD of cache-******* directories in there that I think I should just delete.

Any other ideas? Thanks for the help.

And if I install another hack that burns my board, may you be the first one to hurt me! <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I am VERY VERY VERY frustrated. This should have been easy to fix: wiping out the old files should have cured the problem.

I am still stuck in the cp.cgi loop. If you want to see for yourself, let me know and I will email you the info you need. []booking@creeping-death.net.<br[/] />

Turned out to be exactly what I thought - your Perl install was not done properly, so Perl didn't know where to find vars_config.

No vars_config -> UBB slips into setup mode.

Upgrading is going to be a slight PITA for you in the future, as you'll need to edit cp.cgi and ultimatebb.cgi each time you upgrade... until your host fixes their Perl.

Aaaanyway.

As I said, if you hack your board again, Dave'll do the same thing he did this time... put every file in your cgi-bin into a directory called "thisdoesntbelong".

<img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Case closed.

Thanks Charles for helping Brian with this issue.

I would like to better understand (cuz I'm not a developer) and maybe it would be valuable to others to understand.

What do you mean by a proper Perl install?

It sounds like a continuing problem with the way the host has Perl installed, is that correct?

And, how does someone figure out before they install a UBB if Perl is installed correctly?

We can move this discussion elsewhere if you would like - <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Is the improper path to PERL causing me to be unable to log into the boards?! Can I downgrade back to 6.05?

It's not a path to perl problem.

Don't downgrade.

That other problem is completely, totally unrelated to this one.

This is purely your host's fault.

Your host did not actually INSTALL Perl on that server. They just "imaged" Perl and other programs onto the server.

Perl needs to integrate itself a little with Windows in order to get everything working. Unless it does this, Perl won't know where to look for libraries and modules on startup.

This is the exact problem you're having. Your host's Perl installation was imaged, improperly installed, or is otherwise abnormal.

In partciular, it can't find the vars_config.cgi file. I had to enter the full path to vars_config in cp and ultimatebb to get them to load. (Once vars_config is loaded, the UBB takes care of the rest of the paths.)

Creeping, you seem to have extremely poor luck... Why in the world did you switch to an NT host in the first place? <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Ok, what I did was downgrade to 6.04 and then I had to edit my file (00000001) and take out the extra info. Then I ran through some maintenance procedures. When everything looked ok, I upgraded back to 6.1.0.2 and then uploaded Charles' edited cp.cgi and ultimatebb.cgi files.

So far it seems to be working ok except for some minor glitches (tried to send a mass email in text but it said I was trying to send it in HTML so I just went back and selected HTML - said it was a ubb_lib.cgi problem). Oh well, AT LEAST IT WORKS NOW!!!

And I still have a few hairs left.

Charles:

I didn't see your message before I downgraded. Sorry. I actually NEEDED to downgrade before I could upgrade. Now, before you YELL at me, and you WILL yell at me, I downgraded, upgraded then installed the WHO's ONLINE hack. Yes, I know...you are going to stop offering support for me because I installed this hack. I am sorry but my users DEMAND it. They love that hack and it's one of the reasons why they keep coming back to my board. They always know who is online with them.

Now, to answer your question I have CRAPTACULAR luck with HOSTS because this one offered a GREAT rate but neglected to tell me they only offered NT servers. I would have PREFERRED to stay on UNIX simply because I am used to using it for the boards.

UNIX RULES for running UBB. Much faster and easier to manipulate. NT is slower, more of a memory hog and has complications if everything isn't perfect.

Thanks for your help. You are truly a world-class guy and InfoPop is a great organization. As much trouble, whining and bitching that I've done, you guys smile and graciously help me.

THANK YOU!

Well, at least it's working.

But if things start going screwy again, and you need to ask for help here, remove WOL from the board AND remove the datafiles...

I will, I promise. My host is being irate about the Perl installation so I will probably have to switch....again! LOL. But I had to have the Who's Online hack and they really want to the Custom Titles and Avatar hacks, but I will wait for InfoPop to add them.

THANK YOU!

I must be missing something:

Can I assign someone a unique title based on # of posts?

Because I've searched the control panel and can find nothing that lets me do that! That's a MAJOR perk my users like.

I have to disagree. ReadyHosting.com offers 10x what Pair.COm offers at only 7.95 a month. Mind you, you have to use NT servers, but I get 500 megs of web space, unlimited email address, unlimited bandwidth and much more than Pair.com offers.

The problem has always been their NT servers <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

You can't assign based on post count - you have to assign them to each user individually.

Control panel -> Members -> View/Edit Member Records

Enter the user number and hit submit.

When the results come up, click on the user name.

You can assign a title using the resulting new window.

Ok, now I see what you mean. That isn't exactly what I wanted but will suffice for now. I really wanted to assign ranks based on # of posts.
