Hello,
I’m hoping someone can help me with this problem.
I am using UBB Threads 6.5.4 and I am receiving the following error messages:
First error page: Warning: mysql_connect(): Too many connections in /usr/home/alleno/www/htdocs/forum/mysql.inc.php on line 36 Warning: mysql_query(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /usr/home/alleno/www/htdocs/forum/mysql.inc.php on line 108 Script: /usr/home/alleno/www/htdocs/forum/ubbt.inc.php Line#: 1591 SQL Error: Too many connections SQL Error #: 1040 Query: SELECT U_Username,U_Password,U_SessionId, U_StyleSheet, U_Status, U_Privates, U_FrontPage, U_Number, U_Banned,U_LastOn,U_OC_Userid FROM w3t_Users WHERE U_Number = '6'
Second error page 504 error.
I understand that this error probably is related to my web hosting company (Verio). And, this problem occurs usually doing peak hours of 10 AM – 2PM. But now I get it in the evening hours also. When I contact the hosting company tech support they cannot duplicate this error. In their defensive, the problem is intermittent and doesn’t appear all the time
Is this a hosting or software problem? What can I suggest to the hosting company.
Any help or guidance would be appreciated
Thank you in advance

Your main issue is:
Warning: mysql_connect(): Too many connections in /usr/home/alleno/www/htdocs/forum/mysql.inc.php on line 36
Basically your host has a limit of the number of connections that can be made to the MySQL server at any given time. At your peek times you are exceeding that limit. You can ask them what the limit is and if they can raise that for you.

Thank you for that quick reply. I will contact the hosting company and ask that question. I usually have between 100 and 200 forum visitors at all times.
Also, does Groupee still offer web hosting?

First thing would be to make sure you don't have Persistent connections turned on in the DB section of the control panel. If that's on then the connections won't close which could be part of it.
With the recent changes, currently we only offer Enterprise level hosting, which is a bit much for standard websites.

Nope, I do not have Persistent connections turned on.
Sorry to hear about the hosting. Can you or anyone point me in the direction of a quality host?

Can anyone help suggest what type of hosting capacity I should look for in a web host?
The activity on my web site is currently: Sessions/visitors per day: 2,000-2,500 Pageviews per day: 15,000 Bytes transferred per day 270 MB
My forums have about 20,000 posts. Usually within a 90 minute span there are about 100 to 150 forum visitors. High was 226.
Currently I am getting a MySQL error of too many connections, or a 504 time out error. I use Verio as my host and I have their top shared hosting plan which is 1000 GB monthly data transfer and 40 GB disk space. Their tech support is suggesting I switch to a VPS to combat this issue.
I have very little expertise concerning servers and hosting. All I really can do is upload files via FTP to keep my site updated. Please dummy down your replies.
Thanks

Likely you'll want to move to a VPS or Dedicated soltuion; the 504 error is a timeout error; you can find more information about it at: http://www.checkupdown.com/status/E504.html

Check to see if you have permanent connections enabled. If so turn it OFF! then ask tech support to restart Apache.
