Hiya,

I'm running UBB Classic 6.7.1 and have to prune regularly due to the huge number of files it generates (believe it or not my host has a max limit of 30K files!). I'm guessing that Classic creates a file for each post (or is it each topic)?

Anyway, does Threads have better file management (whatever) than this?

Thanks!

Yes - it is MySQL based, so far far fewer files (all script). Your only limit might be if your host restricts your MySQL database size - if they do then it might be time to relocate. All your limits should really relate to overall disk usage including email, files, databases, stats etc. Never come across a file limit before.

I have come accross a file limit before; IMO you should transfer to a more serious host; restricting sites on files is horrendous for an established site...

Though moving to a MySQL based forum (Like UBB.Threads) from a flat file based forum (Like UBB.Classic) is the first step, but likely your host will have a MySQL size limit in place as well.

UBB.classic stored its data in flat files - 1 per member, 1 per topic in each forum, etc.

UBB.threads v6 & v7 both mainly store their scripts and config on disk. The topics, members, etc are stored in the DB.

I know that v7 does have a few files generated during operation (sessions, templates/compile). Keep in mind that enabling uploads and logging will increase the number of files that are required to operate your forums.

Yes, but you're able to limit the size and ammount of log files as well wink...

Its also good to note that UBB.Threads7 has a cache which will also create additional files to speed up operations...

Thanks guys,

I think you've answered my question! I agree about the host, Hostway (30,000 file limit!). Moving is a such a hassle though!

I now need to decide to go for Threads or look around for a more Web 2.0 sort of community package. I'd like something like groupee.com but they don't sell it. ANy suggestions gratefully received!

A good rule of thumb is to search your webhost on webhostingtalk.com as you can find reviews on a ton of webhosts.

Myself, I'd look at a new host and go with ubb.threads wink...

Another good place to check out webhosting, especially people with experience on UBB, check out https://www.ubbdev.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/postlist/Board/10
