looks good.
How does one turn off the sidebars - also can they be supressed for certain pages (for example on the post pages)

They are individually enabled or disabled in the Control Panel and you can select which side they're displayed on.
There are also ten Custom Islands that can be enabled and you can enter any HTML or PHP code in them. Great for displaying Google Ads or Show RSS feeds or anything.

Just thinking out loud...as a user I would definitely want to be able to turn off the sidebars. It was the first thing I looked for when I logged in, as Sidebars (in my opinion) tend to clutter an interface at times.
Hope this is a future feature! They are great for some things...but lots of users want to see the 'forum' - not the 'portal'.

This is definitely something that we'll be tackling. I was going to do something for version 7 but it will probably wait until 7.1. The main reason is what I'd like to see is something just as customizable for the user as it is for the admin. Meaning, not only the option to turn sidebars off, but the option to rearrange things as well.
The main issue on this is the fact that some site owners don't want somethings moved. Like they may have a deal with a company for an ad but only if it's placed in a certain position. So we need to balance user flexibility and also admin control.

Yeh, it'd be a pain to have advertisements displayed and allow the user to turn them off lol...

True. There could easily be an admin toggle in the Sidebar controls for 'force left sidebar' and/or 'force right sidebar' that would over-ride anything else.
If not toggled...the sidebar control would revert to the default setting for the site and/or the user preference if different.
Looks good so far.

Rick - sounds great ideas - but I think it should be deselectable as a basic as soon as possible - I can see complaints from those with small screens or large text from an early stage - forcing the admin to turn them off for all users

Quick question - where is the 'New Messages' indicator (and other internal navigation) displayed if they are turned off by admin?

Right now, the Forum Navigation can't be turned off. I understand what you're saying, so we're thinking of moving the forum navigation under the breadcrumbs, some being popups, like all the personal stuff under one menu. This would allow for them to be completely turned off when needed.

Is there a way to have the Portal boxes only show up on the Forums page and not anywhere else?

Going back to my original thoughts - whilst my members like the sidebars, they are complaining about them on showflat / showthreaded - especially when viewing from a smaller display.
These days viewing from a PDA is not unusual.
We could do with them being auto-off one some pages.
Of course a PDA style template would be even better - but switching off for some pages would be great.

I disagree about using subdomains for just about anything (think, it's a seperate domain, thus your content isn't credited towards your site through search engines); but a PDA template in itself would be great. I still kind of miss printer friendly posts (from UBB.C) since it ripped all content that isnt' supposed to be printed out.

I disagree about using subdomains for just about anything (think, it's a seperate domain, thus your content isn't credited towards your site through search engines); but a PDA template in itself would be great. I think using a subdomain like http://mobile.gangsterbb.net/ would be great for ease of use on such devices. The content would be taken from Threads anyway; it's just stripped down like printer-friendly. Don't even need/want duplicate content in the SE's... And there could be a benefit to it: It may be considered one more "site" that links to your main site, boosting your SE attractiveness. I still kind of miss printer friendly posts (from UBB.C) since it ripped all content that isnt' supposed to be printed out. I don't recall being able to print out individual posts in .C, but both .C and .T have printer-friendly Topic options...
