How do I disable Hot Topics, apart from editing the postlist template?

completely untested, but some features can be disabled by setting the option to 0.

Should have mentioned that I already tried using a blank, zero and a negative value -- neither worked.

Currently it can't be disabled. However you could set the views or replies for a hot topic to an extremely high number that could never be reached, which would essentially disable them.
