Make a forum just for front page (portal) news; make some posts of whatever content you want listed, then set the permissions ot that forum to not allow users to access it, then you'll have a forum no one can see, that you can post photos and "front page" content to...

I'm designing a portal to be the new home page for our forums ( www.sounddomain.com) when we switch to this software in the coming months. We have a very specific design in mind and I wanted to check and make sure all the features we wanted are supported on the portal and that anything we didn't want could be removed to make room for static content and links. here's a quick list of everything on my mock-up related to the forums: - Search field - Login / Password fields - Recent topics - Forum news - Shout box - Top posters looking through your forum here it sounds like everything is doable except maybe the Login and password fields which I couldn't find an answer for. I'm also curious if there are any standard features that can't be removed or have a fixed position that I would need to work around. any help?

You can do the search field with standard html, just copy the html for the search field and you should be golden.
The login and password fields, you could simply hijack the html from the forum too I believe... theres a mod at UBBDev to read the cookie information from the forums.
RecentTopics can be solved with the external use option on the content islands.
Forum news can be solved with either the UBBNews addon at ubbdev, or an RSS feed.
The shoutbox however doesn't allow for external use outside of the forums (not to mention several users have had issues with resource usage with it on large forums).
Top Posters can be used with external use on the content island.
You can edit most anything out of the forum by editing the template files.

'search' is already an option with a content island As well, it's very simple to pull the portal, including the news and shoutbox, anywhere on your site using a 2-minute mod at ubbdev: https://www.ubbdev.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/312683 - about halfway down the page I post code to edit one line and upload where you want the portal

I'm finding that in the Control Panel I can create post Islands with Topics and Posts but not Categories.
Is there a way around this that would allow me to have an island of select categories with the most popular topic of each category automatically displayed in the island?

You'd have to select all of the forums in that category. As is the category is really no more than a number to which forums assign themselves to.

What else is the Post Islands used for? I only have 1 and that's for Recent Topics. I thought these post islands were for automatic populated information that didn't have to be manually changed. So why do we need so many?

Does "private" include "read only"? I'd like to setup a post island that displays topics from my 'news' forum (which players can only read, but not post in) but it doesn't seem to be working. I get the island, but no topics listed in it. Is there any way to fix this without making the news forum public?

It's definitely possible. Just make sure you choose the right forum in the source forums. Basically, by the "public" warning, that means that even if the forum isn't viewable at all to regular users, if it's selected as a source forum, they'll show up.

well, it's letting me do it with public forums, but none of the private or "read only" forums. Remember, i'm not trying to display the threads in the portal page, i'm trying to display thread topics in an island.
It works for the portal page, but not in an island, and i'm stumped.

Hmm, just to test, what I'd do is deselect all of the other forums and only select one of the read only forums as a source forum. And then clear the cache and see if it displays the threads from within. It doesn't do anything different if a forum is private or public, it just uses whatever is selected as a source forum.
