Hi Everyone,

Am I missing something or is there no spell check available? It seemed like we had a spell check on our old version 5.47 board before the upgrade, but I can't find any way to turn one on in the new version or if it isn't available, are there spell checks available somewhere that work with the board?

Brian

There is no spell checker built into Threads 7 (I don't know about earlier versions as I came from Classic). However, I don't miss it as I use Firefox (with built-in spell checker) wink

No there is no spell check - I think that Allen was making a mod over at ubbdev.com - but a default spellchecker would be great smile

Either that or use firefox 2 smile

The spell check that was included in some older UBB.classic versions was dropped by it's creator years ago. I'm surprised that it still works at all as it was a fairly expensive operation to support.

Nowadays most browsers have one built in. Firefox 2, Safari, I.E. 7 (I think), Opera, they all have it nowadays.

spellcheck.net used to actually advertise the ubb.c mod on their site; they had ad's on it so i'm sure they at least made a smidgeon wink

I feel stupid but every time someone suggest UBBDev I have no idea who that site is. Isn't THIS the official UBB site? Why are they separated as if they are 2 places? Or perhaps I am totally missing something. And folks suggest using Firefox etc.. but that doesn't solve my community problem. I don't need spell check, my members, the vast majority of which use IE as their browser, need spell check. How would me using Firefox solve that for them? AOL, for example, has IE built in. Our stats indicate that over 98% of people visiting our site use IE.

UBBdev.com is the official site for unofficial UBB modifications wink

It used to be very active, but seems to have slowed down since Threads 7 replaced earlier products. :/ But it's still the place to ask for/get custom mods (such as a spell-checker) that aren't currently featured in the standard software...

(Okay, again glider posts right before me! Maybe I'll just get to some other work then... laugh )

UBBCentral is the OFFICIAL UBB website, HOWEVER, Groupee (the UBB Owners) do not provide support for any sites operating with modifications (as modifications themselves at times can be causing some issues in forums).

UBBDev has been around for a long time operating by UBB users versus the UBB owners (groupee).

As for sugguesting FireFox, I myself am not doing so, I've simply helped state that a lot of modern browsers have spellchecks built into them.

So it sounds like I wouldn't want to use anything on UBB Dev because it would void us getting support? We are totally tech-disadvantaged and we had Rick do our upgrade and site design because we don't want to meddle with it. If using a mod from there would prevent us from getting his support, that sounds like a disaster for us? Or am I misunderstanding you?

Thanks for your patience here with these questions. We didn't upgrade for all those years (we were using Version 5.47 with no updates since Jan of 2000) because we didn't want to screw anything up. I am already worried about how to update to 7.1 or if we should just live with our slightly older version.

No, thats not what i'm saying, i'm saying that UBBDev exists because modding your forum in general voids your support to using the helpdesk at groupee for support (support can be obtained here, ubbdev, or the support desk; generally most support would occour here or ubbdev; especially if a mod was causing an issue).

Most of th eitme you request support it's here, and not th egroupee helpdesk, which here I doubt rick cares if you're using a mod or not.

as for what version to run, I'd push for 7.1

Still can't get used to calling it ubbdev LOL - prefered the name of threadsdev wink as it is threads we are now using and not ubb - guess it depends which side of the fence you come from ubb or threads wink

'eh I preferred the "UBB Code Hackers" hangout wink... Not to mention, UBBDev is older tongue (checked the domain whois, UBBDev was regged in 2000 whereas ThreadsDev was registered in 2001).

And no matter what product you where running, UBB.Threads or UBB.Classic, it was (and still is) UBB wink...

Using a mod will not necessarily preclude support. It will preclude support if a mod causes a problem. It will preclude your being upgraded through Rick or groupee as he will not upgrade a modded board if you intend to keep your mods.

Honestly, if you have 0 technical ability and can neither install nor maintain a mod on your own you're best off not touching them.

I concourr completely; theres a lot that can go wrong just in the installation of a mod (you are editing files and removing portions of official code and/or replacing them with 3rd party code afterall).
