I did get my message boards all finished. You could view them at www.easymadememories.com I do have another question. I get this message when I try to upload new avatars. Unable to remove avatar. Please check permissions on the files in your avatars directory and try again. It is not allowing me to post new avatars or delete the old ones which are ick! Could you tell me how to fix this. I have checked all my settings in fact they are exactly like my other website so not sure what is not checked. TIA Aspen

what is your permissions set to for the avatar directory? You have an option for the allowable size limit for avatars, yours may be bigger than the allowable limit here.

the avitars directory needs to be 777, and the files in it 666.
As for the error mesage for avitar size, this could also be attributed to the permission issue

Hi Gizmo, ok under Profile settings. I set the directory to 777 and the files to 666. I tried to download the same avatar jgeoff has and it tells me that pictures can be no larger thatn 666 bytes.
I also have all the setting checked to allow importing your own avatars etc. Aspen

Under Membership -> Profile Settings, you'll see where it has a field for the max size of uploaded avatars. This is set in bytes, so it sounds like you need to adjust that to a higher value.

Maximum file size fo uploaded avatars 666
That is the max size (in bytes) of the avatars you're allowing; if you want it larger, change it to what you want your maximum to be; I'd say probably 10240 for 10k

You set the max to 10k. The image you're trying to upload is OVER 10k. Process of elimation, if you want to upload files LARGER than 10k, make the limit larger than 10k.
There is no "set size"; it's whatever YOU as the admin want it to be... I myself would dispise allowing users to upload avatars over 10k... Keep in mind not everyone is on broadband connections, so if you have a bunch of 100k avatars, thats a lot of downloading (and wasted bandwidth); but to each their own.
The size I gave you before (10k, or 10240 bytes) was meerely an example, you need to customize the max size to whatever YOU WANT... And anyone who's attempting to upload an avatar OVER that size limit WILL get the error, it's intended behavior.

my website is new. only about 7 members. no one has avatars. i am trying to upload the same avatar i have posted here. i am trying to get avatars to work not attachment. My website www.easymadememories.comthe only avatars i am able to use are the ones that come with the program. (ick). I have worked with avatars on my other website. www.breastfeeding.comI have no problems with avatars there. I set all the setting the same on both sites. I have changed the setting on easymade memories per your advise. On bf.com i also imported avatars to use and replaced the ick ones. I know how to do that it is just not working on my new site and I have to ask because I don't know what to change to make it work. TIA

your avitar is only 3k or so, a setting of 5k in the "Maximum file size for uploaded avatars" field should allow it without issue; at this point you're saying you have it set to 10k which is more than enough for that avitar...

The image file on your computer, is it (for sure) the same one you have here? if so, it's well under the 10k limit and shouldn't spew that error.

I just posted the moose a few days ago on here. I am trying to post the exact same one from the same place on my emm boards. I know it should work. I have several in fact that I use on bf.com that should work. I just keep getting error messages. I will only allow me to post the ick ones that come with the program. It loads those easily.

That is very odd that it'll accept some, and not others; when all are under the size limit...

They are all on my bf.com message boards and work fine.

lol that needs to be the direcdtory that is on your server which will hold uploaded avatars; if that's blank then that'd be your culprit me thinks...
As for invalid picture type, you have to set the types of images; i think the defaults are gif and jpg.

Avatar Upload Storage Directory is the FULL PATH to the directory where you want to store uploaded avatars. It must be chmodded 777.
Full URL to Avatar Storage Directory is the URL to the directory above.
Max size is fine. Height and Width can be set to just about anything you want, theres no proper setting.

I don't know what the settings are on your server, you need to create a directory to hold the images, then you need to enter the path and url in the two fields; it'd be unique to your configuration.
You can take the URL from the paths and url section and just add "uploads" to it, then make an uploads directory in your ubb directory; this should work.

In regard to Avatars only, what needs to be checked to allow avatars other than the checks in /profile settings/avatars/?
Is there anywhere else that this feature needs to be set first, before setting in Profile settings/avatars/?
On the "Avatar Upload Storage Directory", is this path relative to the main web site, or relative to ubbthreads.php, or what?
What permissions does folder need to have? (microsoft IIS 6.0 server)

Path has to be the full path to the directory.
Permissions, umm, I don't use IIS, but it should have full write, full read, full execute (in unix thats what 777 equals).
To use avatars, i'm sure it's just Profile Settings/Avatars tab.

By full path, do you mean the full server path? As in E:/wwwroot/forum/avatar?

OK, The avatar folder now shows it exists and is writable (when you click :"click to test directory"), but when I upload an avatar it still doesn't show up. Any ideas?

My thought now is "Wheres NTDoc when I need a windows user" lol... I'm not entirely sure...
You have the Path and URL properly configured, you have a size entered, and you have the image types set... It should work lol
