I finally got over my fears and took the first step by renewing with a gold package. smile

I starting installing Threads and everything was cool with permissions and everything on my server.

However, I'm confused about how to handle the main admin account.

Let's see if I can articulate this...

You can either create an admin account during install, or skip that, opting to import and then use that admin.

I'm not ready to import my classic. I just want to get a version of Threads up and running and play with it.

If I create a new admin account during install (which happens to be the same as my admin name with my Classic), will I run into a problem when I finally do wish to import my classic? I want to keep my same admin name.

You dont need to creat a new admin account. All members and permissions will be importet.

I think that can be a problem. Better start with a gizmo installion

I put a password protection (.htaccess) in ../install during the import. So nobody can access the directory and creat a admin account.

Thanks. I read the Gizmo tips.

I'm still a little confused, though.

I want to install Threads and play with it. I'm not ready to import.

If I enter the same Classic admin name on Threads install, what will happen when I finally do import? When I take Threads live, I want to keep my same main admin name. How do I do that?

You can create an admin user now, however when you import your classic data it will import your classic admin as well. At that point you could merge the 2 admin accounts into 1.

Or just drop the tables and run createtable.php then the import. You could then 'play' with adding forums, topics, etc until ready to import.

I done a "Test" import from classic to Threads Under Database X
then when i went Live with an Import (The Real One)
which was a few weeks later the import was done again
but sent to Database Y

Now i have a test database to play with and break.

This is the recommendation I stand firmly behind.

As with you guys - I did the full import so that I could play with a real world scenario.

I got a few of my users to have a muck around and throw in suggestions.

All the while, my old classic board was running as normal.

While I was setting things up - I went totally over the top and wrote down every single setting on every page of the CP (well the ones I was changing to my own settings.)

A good way to learn the CP and get input at the same time.

Lol I do that with my firmware settings on my router; write everything down so that when I upgrade I have all my settings

You could just make a backup copy of your /includes folder(recommended to keep a backup regardless) smile
