Hello,

I'm assisting in the transfer and upgrades of a rather large UBB.Classic board. We have migrated the board from an old NT server to a new FreeBSD machine. The forum software is currently at 6.7.0 and we will be moving up to 7.1 threads in a few weeks.

The original board owner passed away at the end of 2006 and I'm assisting the new board admin with these upgrades.

1st Question: I was told that there was reluctance to upgrade to 6.7.3 because the member number would be reset. I emailed UBB support and Rick there seemed to think that would not happen from 6.7.0 to 6.7.3

Could any of you here that has done this before confirm that?

I was told however, when upgrading to 7.1 threads the "gaps" in member numbers would be removed, thus shifting all of the member numbers down.

This seems to be a big issue for the current membership on the forums (almost 11,000 members). I was thinking of creating dummy records to fill in the gaps so member numbers would be preserved during the upgrade, and then removing those dummy records after the upgrade had been completed.

2nd question:

Under 7.1 threads, if you delete a member does the next new signup take that recently deleted number, or does the system keep handing them out from the highest available number allowing the gaps to remain?

The member number isn't reset in 6.7.3, it's reset in 7.0 as data is migrated from flat files to a database.

Yes, when upgrading to 7.x all gaps will be removed, all member numbers will be changed.

No matter what, the member numbers will be changed; as member #1 in threads is the "guest"/"anonymous" user. That is unless you had no member #1 and hacked the importer to not re-assign id's... I've not played with the importers enough to specify how to do so however.
