using ip address instead of domain name?

I have set up a dedicated ip address to use to install ubbthreads and photopost into my site. I want to get everything working before i point my domain name to that ip. The question i have is can i tell ubbthreads to use my domain name before i have made the changes to the dns?

Just set the domain name as the ip addres in threads; when you're ready to move, just change it to the domain
