In 6.5.5, w3t_Poll I see some values in the B_Poll field that are some digits followed by a username. Can someone explain what this is all about? (I was looking at indexing that field.)

I think that's a holdover from older polls, prior to 6.5. In those versions the poll id was comprised of the post and the username or something of that nature. In 6.5 we switched over to strictly a numeric poll id, but we had to retain the varchar field type so it wouldn't break old polls.
