Fully agree with Giz. If Rick wants to lock it down on his site for some reason that's fine, but for release version it should not matter and should allow all of them.

love the new gallery. one comment on file sizes. did a test
original file 130k small version is 30k
the large version you get when i click on the larger image (not the thumbnail) is actually BIGGER than the original.
original 1024X768 130k large version when clicked on is 1024 X 768 and 170k
not good. shouldn't make the files BIGGER than the original for the same size image

Agreed. (IMHO) When you click on the thumbnail it should point to the unaltered original image.

Very odd that it made it larger; even with the quality changes that are done when uploaded, you'd think it'd still be smaller...
There are a few bugs though with the system itself, though not show stoppers

i use an excellent jpg tool, projpeg, that works way better than say the photoshop jpg tool. so the images it produces are smaller than most jpg algorithms. that could be it

Yeah but if you upload an animated GIF file and it gets modified by the system than you will lose that animation.

The few bugs I know of are: 1. Transparent images are no longer transparent. 2. Animated images are no longer animated. 3. I believe that all images are saved as jpegs, even if the source was of a differant type. Not really show stoppers, but minor annoyances ... Rick did do one hell of a job for the time period he worked in ...

4. Non-Latin characters break things, kinda like PM's in 7.0-1. 5. your filesize quirk...
I am rathere entertained by your filesize quirk though lol

4. Non-Latin characters break things, kinda like PM's in 7.0-1. I suggest , filename are renamed to randomly-generated UUIDs. This will prevent filename encoding and server file system encoding incompatibility problem.
English is not my native language. I try my best to express my thought precisely. I hope you understand what I mean. If any misunderstanding results from culture gaps, I apologize first.

The photo gallery is definitely something we'll be improving on over time. It's in a it's infancy stage right now. For beta 3 we do have GD working to keep the image in it's same format that it was uploaded in, and also in most cases will preserve transparency (thanks to Ian Spence). Still need to work on ImageMagick for this.
Linking to the original unaltered file would be somewhat of a problem. In *most* cases it will make the filesize much smaller. Taking a 1 MB picture and shrinking the full size down to under 300k depending on the quality setting in the control panel.
Other things suggested in here will be coming eventually. I know this first release will have some issues and won't be as flexible as everyone wants it to be, but just trying to keep releases coming fairly quick.

Definitely not knocking Rick. Just observations for future improvements. I think you've done an awesome job overall. Great product and very good attention to detail which is often quite lacking in todays fast paced World of programming.
PNG and GIF (since they are allowed) are the ones that potentially have issues, the JPG should not be an issue regenerating (would still like it to keep the original aspect ratio and dimensions of the original)
I also understand the need for space and bandwidth management, difficult balance at times.

That could be a decent work around; but not really a fix to the problem...
