Rick,
The way you have the Island showing the latest gallery posts is quite a nice touch I think. Great work guy.

Agreed, it looks like a thoughtful feature, good work!
What about adding alt+title to the images in the gallery island?

Rick,
Might be nice to add or at least not remove the menu for the popup window when you open the image in a new window. You can use CTRL-P to print it but for some I'm sure it's not known and they might want to print the image and don't know how with the menu removed.

Are we able to turn "off" the photo gallery feature if we don't want it?
Thanks, looks good.

We have our own photo galleries on our site. Not sure how this photo gallery is setup but do the photos shown here have to be sucked up from a hard-drive or can they be existing URLs of images online?

When you start a new Gallery Post you have the normal post options so i cant see why not. But i don't think they will hit the photo island.
One to test and play with ? Give it a go.

Ive just done a test.
To use the Gallery you have to UPLOAD 1 Image. Or you get a UBB Error telling you so.

Okay, but you posted here and said in the content below so with no link it sort of makes it difficult to track down what you were referencing.
Thanks

Not sure if you should be able to, but it seems that if someone replies to a Gallery post that they can not add their picture to it.

Hmm, I think you may be right NT. Having images posted in the reply kinda messes things up, since they all should be in thumbnails and not buried down in the comments. I think we may need to lock down what ubbcode can be posted in comments.

Gallery New Post Icons
Explanation Loving the galley, but when i enter the gallery my eyes are now trained on how a normal forum works. Meaning I'm looking for a post icon if there are new posts / comments?
After my eyes re-focus, i can now see the (2) along side comments.
I dont know if i'm just getting used to it, or my eyes are really missing a posting icon to say no new comments? I feel i want something to change colour.

Replies should be replies. its late now, so i'm getting slower and may have missed somthing

I would like to see an area at the top of the forum where you could post a guidelines / rules type of statement. Nothing complicated just something to let people know what kind of material they can post and that the contents are being monitored.
Also, can the gallery have Post Moderation like other forums?

Also, can the gallery have Post Moderation like other forums? Gallery Forums use the same posting code that standard forums do; so I'd say yes.

You can set the size of the images from the control panel.
At the moment it is set to 4 images in a row though.

GIF images - I just tried to upload image.gif and when it uploaded it changed the file name to image.jpg.
Is there an option to allow gif images or is it locked to jpg?

Rick has it currently locked down to .jpg to save server space with additional compression. It may be changed to give admin preferences in the future.

I think it has something to do with the way GD works?
I spotted the same on ricks site with .png
pretty neat it can convert. Saying that it will prevent a rotating gif on a 2 min pause.

It should save a gif as a gif, a jpg as a jpg, and a png as a png; RE: gif and PNG support transparency, JPG does not.

Fully agree with Giz. If Rick wants to lock it down on his site for some reason that's fine, but for release version it should not matter and should allow all of them.

love the new gallery. one comment on file sizes. did a test
original file 130k small version is 30k
the large version you get when i click on the larger image (not the thumbnail) is actually BIGGER than the original.
original 1024X768 130k large version when clicked on is 1024 X 768 and 170k
not good. shouldn't make the files BIGGER than the original for the same size image

Agreed. (IMHO) When you click on the thumbnail it should point to the unaltered original image.

Very odd that it made it larger; even with the quality changes that are done when uploaded, you'd think it'd still be smaller...
There are a few bugs though with the system itself, though not show stoppers

i use an excellent jpg tool, projpeg, that works way better than say the photoshop jpg tool. so the images it produces are smaller than most jpg algorithms. that could be it

Yeah but if you upload an animated GIF file and it gets modified by the system than you will lose that animation.

The few bugs I know of are: 1. Transparent images are no longer transparent. 2. Animated images are no longer animated. 3. I believe that all images are saved as jpegs, even if the source was of a differant type. Not really show stoppers, but minor annoyances ... Rick did do one hell of a job for the time period he worked in ...

4. Non-Latin characters break things, kinda like PM's in 7.0-1. 5. your filesize quirk...
I am rathere entertained by your filesize quirk though lol

4. Non-Latin characters break things, kinda like PM's in 7.0-1. I suggest , filename are renamed to randomly-generated UUIDs. This will prevent filename encoding and server file system encoding incompatibility problem.
English is not my native language. I try my best to express my thought precisely. I hope you understand what I mean. If any misunderstanding results from culture gaps, I apologize first.

The photo gallery is definitely something we'll be improving on over time. It's in a it's infancy stage right now. For beta 3 we do have GD working to keep the image in it's same format that it was uploaded in, and also in most cases will preserve transparency (thanks to Ian Spence). Still need to work on ImageMagick for this.
Linking to the original unaltered file would be somewhat of a problem. In *most* cases it will make the filesize much smaller. Taking a 1 MB picture and shrinking the full size down to under 300k depending on the quality setting in the control panel.
Other things suggested in here will be coming eventually. I know this first release will have some issues and won't be as flexible as everyone wants it to be, but just trying to keep releases coming fairly quick.

Definitely not knocking Rick. Just observations for future improvements. I think you've done an awesome job overall. Great product and very good attention to detail which is often quite lacking in todays fast paced World of programming.
PNG and GIF (since they are allowed) are the ones that potentially have issues, the JPG should not be an issue regenerating (would still like it to keep the original aspect ratio and dimensions of the original)
I also understand the need for space and bandwidth management, difficult balance at times.
