Can I get some feedback on what you guys set this to?
My users disagree so much on this point.

2 hours for both. I've never had any complaints about it.
I have one guy that makes everyone nuts though. Without fail, he edits every one of his posts. So someone will reply to him, but by the time they've posted, he's changed it so that their reply is out of context.

I think edit one hour. Delete is either one hour or not allowed.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. My problem is that I have a technical forum and the users tend to 'need' to tweak their responses. However, that said, it gets abused.... I have one guy that makes everyone nuts though. Without fail, he edits every one of his posts. So someone will reply to him, but by the time they've posted, he's changed it so that their reply is out of context. Likewise, my guy (who is extremely knowledgable) sometimes gets a bit heated and fires off a few volleys, then appears to regret it and edits his posts to an empty response - throwing the context into disarray. Right now, I'm thinking, 2hrs for both. I can't see the point in making the delete any shorter than the edit. (What's the point of editing the post to a blank screen but not being able to delete it?) I'd still welcome further input though, if you'd like

OT (Hah that's a laugh!) I've just noticed the "Switch to Full Reply Screen" button. Excellent , I've wished for this feature since I upgraded to threads.

We have it set at 99999999999 or something like that There is little to no abuse with the editing, and quite a few people update their starting posts of topics. We have forums where lists of people that sign up for certain stuff is maintained.

Driv, the other people often "tease" him about it, which is just very thinly veiled irritation. One day somebody is going to get real pissed about it though. I have been on a number of occasions.
To be honest though, he is the only one who abuses the edit/delete thing. I don't see changing the rules for everyone else, just because of him.

Personally, if I thought I could get away with it easily enough with my users, I'd set both to zero. But things are running pretty smooth right now and I don't have to worry as much about poor behavior.

We have forums where lists of people that sign up for certain stuff is maintained. That's a very good reason - in the 'right' sort of forum Driv, the other people often "tease" him about it, which is just very thinly veiled irritation. One day somebody is going to get real pissed about it though. I have been on a number of occasions.
To be honest though, he is the only one who abuses the edit/delete thing. I don't see changing the rules for everyone else, just because of him. Rose, it appears we have an almost identical situation here Personally, if I thought I could get away with it easily enough with my users, I'd set both to zero. I live in hope....

I have it set to about three days.
It prevents stealth editing way in the future, but most "abusers" get spoiled by people who quote their text anyway.

Unlimited 999999999 or similar without going and looking.
When you post programming code and then find that you found a better coding method or routine then we want you to update your post.
We don't allow normal users to delete posts though.
Now to address Rose's issue (which we've had before too) perhaps some sort of back up routine to save the post when a user does delete (sort of like Exchange that doesn't really delete it till later on) It would only go into backup mode when the EDIT button is clicked.
