As it is now, as the admin, I get to decide what islands are available, and where they go....if the users can disable the right or left column and so forth....

But, I got to thinking about people being able to create their own layouts....what about have an admin option that allows us to pass on the options to the users, so that if enabled, the users will get a listing of island content that's been enabled, and they can choose which ones they want to see, and where it will go (left, right, 1,2,3, etc)

Maybe an admin option to force or mandate that a particular island has to be at a particular spot (would only really work for the 1 position I guess, or 1,2) but I think it'd be pretty cool.

I was worrying until i read the last mandatory option.

I was thinking advertising you see and i allow my
members to turn off the right but the left is always on show.

Ive seen some amasing sites working like this,
even custom google home pages allow you to move
them around.

I think Rick had something similar in mind when first introducing the side islands; right now a lot of things are just in a rough state, to which they'll be improved upon in time.

Great sugguestion though, I think it'd be cool to allow customization options.

Yah, see, when I posted it...here in NZ, my birthday had already passed...but in the states...it was still on.

Sorta came to me as I was agonizing over island layouts and what would be better where...and revelation (it sorta hurt too)
