We all get limits imposed upon us by our hosts 20M / 50 M / 100M - whatever...
But has anyone had a database limit set before?
I use a few different hosts (none of which I'm very happy about at the mo') and currently they don't charge for MySQL space.
Is this normal?

Yes 1&1 offer you a million databases but none of them can be over 100mb
After my first test import from classic to threads i was horrified to find that i sat at 130mb sql.
I begged and pleaded for the limit to be increased but it was there set up and then offered me a managed and then a dedicated server for astronomical prices.
So i was forced to go the dedicated server root. A good job i have a friend who's been in the business for a while and guided me to a reliable service.
So yes its becoming the norm more and more in my opinion that hosting company's are attaching limits in one way or another with there sql services.
Hope that helps.

Lol plenty of limits: MySQL Space Limit - Worthless, completely worthless, it's there to force you to upgrade becasue the next limit is worthless too! MySQL Database Limit - but comeon, with database prefixing you don't NEED more than one... MySQL Thread Limit - Actually worth something, ensures specific users don't bogart mysql for their own. Server Space Limit - Duah, this one is actually required in most places... Bandwidth Limitation - (see above)
Then theres email limits, email alias limits, ftp user limits, resource limits, etc.

so far so good. Only have the e-mail and ftp user limits. At least that's what they tell me.

Trust me, if you're on a shared host, theres a 110% chance you have a MySQL Thread Limit; otherwise theres nothing to stop userA from abusing the living hell out of MySQL and rendering it useless for users B-Z...

No, I agree just mean that unlike many of the other sites I've not run into these limits. The ones that seem to show up the most here are HOW MANY DB and SIZE of DB which as you pointed out is stupid.

Lol yes, how many // size are idiotic limits... If configured properly it will store in the users space and utilize their total space limits; vs enforcing limits that make no sense...

If configured properly it will store in the users space and utilize their total space limits Giz, can you explain that in words I can use with our hosting company? We have all these gigs of server space that we'll never use, yet we have limits on our database size. I've just never got that.

Ok...
The MySQL space limit is an idiotic limit, the MySQL database size should reflect that of available disk space for the user. Modern control panels such as Ensim or CPanel or even Plesk will take this into account.
The limitation would thus be anything available to the users total available webspace versus a MySQL space limit. So if the user has 8 gigs of space, their mysql limit would be anything they would want up to their 8 gigs of space.
Honestly, if your webhost is enforcing these limits, you should look elsewhere as there are plenty which don't have such insane limits. Then theres always VPS' which are as low as $30 at some places now adays which is at times more than some people are paying for virtualhosting...

Thanks Gizmo. My husband sent our hosting company an email about the database limits - requesting that we do not have limits. While they didn't reply, we haven't been charged any extra, and we're deliberately going over the limit.
I agree about the webspace - it should include the database space.

Rose, i highly doubt they'll change their setup; it'd be more trouble than it's worth after operating like that for so long...

One of the biggest scams IMO is to offer say
20GB Web Space but only allow you 10GB Of Traffic
So to fill your space you will go over quota and either be suspended or charged (Thanks 1&1 for a $160 Bill for Traffic - Few years ago now).
They may use bigger numbers now, but web space and bandwidth is an easy catch for a web host.
1&1 can offer x15 mysql's for example but you can not exceed 100mb PERIOD. (Regardless of all the space in the world, you cant merge your 15 sql's into one) The data base will run but soooooo slowly.
hope that helps

I do know we'll have to change hosts sometime, Giz. Just not sure if we're ready for a VPS yet though.
Any recommendations?

Any recommendations? Slap me if I'm wrong but http://www.midphase.com has been good to me for few years now and very few of those types of limits.

Well, you know when you need a VPS when: 1. Your webhost contacts you about your resource usage. 2. You need a lot of space and bandwidth and you need it dedicated JUST for you. or 3. You have several sites you want to consolidate.
I have several hosting sites bookmarked that have looked promising over the years, but I don't feel comfortable posting it in public (you know, I don't actually know about their services since I haven't ever used them before, but I've heard good things about them)
