I don't know if anyone has suggested this, but it would be nice if a text message could be sent toa cell phone and/or instant messenger when a watched topic has a new post

You could set your email address as your cellphone, then any "alerts" would be sent there vs your email addy; though i fear it'd be semi cumbersome on the text message length (although a picture message can be up to like 5k characters)

Also as the system would vary between countries then I am not sure how this would work

Also who would pay for the texts at at least 5p per text it could be quite expensive.

and i fail to see what languages would matter in parsing emails

on an aside. we had software installed on a site (process control crapola) where the text messaging module (experimental) was left on over the weekend.

for some unknown reason, the alarm module racked up $3000 worth of text message charges as it sat in an infinite loop sending out messages to the effect of "your Chilled water return temp is too high -- please address this issue quickly"
