Okay - I need some suggestions. AA are launching a new service from our local airport to JFK, and I am currently holding 2 seats for October 29th to November 5th. Essentially the prices are at least 2/3rds off the usual price Now we need somewhere nice (but not too expensive!) to stay. We are not big city people - so am not keen on spending $400+ a night to stay in NY - so are looking for a flight somewhere else in the USA or by train if within a few hours journey time. Where would be nice to visit during this week? Anything considered

Train to Washington DC. Weather will be mild as it's not too far north to really be chilly yet, but past the hot period. Fall rains should be started yet. See the Smithsonian Museum and then go from there.

See the Smithsonian Museum and then go from there. Second on the train to DC - we went from DC to NY on our honeymoon via the Acela Express - nice fast train and lots of fun. PS: you can stay in NY for less than $200/night if you plan well. You can stay in a nice hotel within a block of the subway in Queens or New Jersey (easy access to Manhattan) for ~$100 or so as well. LOTS to do in DC - highly recommended. We'd move there if we moved anywhere other than Texas Smithsonian, all the landmarks. About the only thing you can't get into on short notice is the Capitol and White House. You'd need at least 4 months notice to do the capitol, and a few months more for the white house.

Come to JFK and I will pick you guys up LOL thanks. We are thinking maybe staying one night in New York, as I have not been there before. All the hotels I have looked at are rather pricey - and we hear bad stories about many parts of NY (probably untrue - but not knowing the area, do not wish to be somewhere where a) we can't easily get to the desired tourist areas and b) where we fear for going out. As I am partially disabled I have to be careful, and choose somewhere close to decent transport. Although we are now thinking of flying somewhere else in the US on a connecting flight - probably south where it should be warmer LOL (Sorry Gizzy - but your neck of the woods sounds too cold in winter ) More planning to be done I think

No, Rick's neck of the wood is cold in the winter, it rarely gets below 50 at Christmas time ...

I live on the east coast and have traveled from Maine to Florida.
What kind of activities are you interested in, and what do you want to do? Give a little more info. and I can give you some options.

Yes it does. Was only 104 today but AC going all day can't keep it cold, reasonable but for a 5 Ton AC unit I'd think I could freeze meat in the house, but not so.

Thanks for all the ideas guys. Looks like we are going to Florida (the flight down to Miami was only another $10 - we are both keen photographers and will be spending some time in the Everglades Now I need to try and send a copy of my disabled badge and passport to one of the Tax Collectors in Florida, so that they can issue me with a temporary disabled parking badge for the US Either that or I need to track one down when I arrive, and queue up for an hour or so Shame the USA doesn't recognise European disabled badges. Although it is only a $15 charge, it will cost double that sending a money order and it via some sort of certified mail Oh and sort out a hire car etc...

They say allow four weeks - and that doesn't include the time to send 3 sheets of A4 paper halfway across the world.... Shame I can't email them the info as PDF's

LOL - a bank transfer would cost the equivalent of about $60!! Don't know if they take plastic - has the USA discovered credit cards yet

they charge you like that for banktransfers? well, I guess it IS international and all.. yikes...
And we invented plastic! <snicker> they should be able to accept anything with a visa/mastercard logo... though some merchant accounts can be anal about non-us addresses... Assuming they have one that processes plastic (a lot of state/govt offices only do checks/mo)

I have done an airboat ride a few years ago with the family - but I wasn't that impressed - much preferred the walk along a boardwalk. Maybe I went with the wrong company

Yeah, I kind of had a connection on this trip. I can't recommend any of the outfits. I went with a local fishing pro. If you've ever heard of Roland Martin, that's who it was. He's kind of a fishing legend. Him driving, me holding on...
