Hey guys, I wondered if you could answer a question for me. Our hosting company recently migrated all their servers, and left our website in a shambles. Among other things, they moved our CGI bin above the root, and none of our CGI scripts are working. I guess we'll figure it out, but my question is, should a CGI bin be above or below the root?

It can be either - usually above the root though - with a direct link to it.
Therefore yoursite.com/cgi-bin/script.pl will go to \home\yoursite.com\cgi-bin\ and perhaps your site is at \home\yoursite.com\files\

But how do you access the cgi-bin from a web-browser (url) or a link, if it is above the root.

Should still be yoursite.com/cgi-bin/
If you are not seeing that then your host has not mapped it properly - it might be cgibin or possibly something else.

It can be either, most commonly it's above the web-root. They tell the webserver the directory and it rewrites yoursite.tld/cgi-bin accordingly; it's quite common.

Right, but it's not working. I'm real angry right now. We got an email from them saying they are migrating servers, but not to expect much, if any, problems. That was the weekend we went to the Grand Canyon. While we were away, the site was down for an entire day. Since then, all our CGI scripts aren't working because they decided to move our bin. Post variables on php pages aren't working. The server time is off by an hour, and our chat room isn't working. They told us in the original email, that the server address wouldn't change, but it did. We don't dare change the server address for the forums, because of the post variables - they aren't working on all the php pages the we did change to the new server address. To add insult to injury, they really don't seem to care. Can anyone tell me about the hosting company that Josh (JoshPet) works for now? It has a great rep, right? We're ready to move on - we've had enough of their prices and database size limits anyway. Sorry, it's been frustrating.

I've not delt with Josh's hosting company in any way, so I can't vouch for them. I have however had great experiances with www.webintellects.com and theres a forum at ubbdev that lists some hosting experiances.

SD, can you vouch for their virtual hosting plans or just their dedicated servers?

both. i started with VPS and the only reason i upgraded to Dedicated was that i personally preferred my own box and had the $ to do it. The VPS was fine. All their Cpanels are now updated to the latest stuff, so it's very easy to even add in RoR (which i've done ). Essentially, you get latest apache, php, mysql and a lot of other stuff that ubbthreads doesn't really need, but is cool for geeks

VPS != Virtual Hosting, standard vhosting (and usually VPS hosting) are generally oversold in the market.
VHosting is the standard environment every joe schmo offers, VPS hosting is Virtual Private Server (or Virtual Dedicated Server), and you should know what a dedicated host is (since you use it)...

Yes, I was talking to you... If you know what a VHost is, then when I asked if you could vouch for them for VHosting why did you ramble on about VPS'?
I highly doubt most UBB owners are on anything more than a standard virtual hosting environment, I'm sure they'd love to pay these dirt cheap prices for VHosting rather than $50+ for a VPS or $100+ for a dedi lol...
I'm merely seeking information on this webhost you so love and enjoy for these users who don't have the wallet to afford a dedicated server every month... Especially since I can't vouch for any webhost for Virtual Hosting... (just their response time and other services)

We run themepark.nl on a shared hosting environment from NXS Internet. We pull away about 70 gb a month which is mostly just pages from the forum (we don't offer image hosting). We have no complaints whatsoever about our site performance.
So shared hosting is not per se a bad thing. As a guy from NXS once said to me, if we can host a thousand websites on our virtual hosting cluster, yours doesn't realy makes the difference.

For me, I don't like running on a VirtualHost... I enjoy customizations, I like upgrading PHP/MySQL whenever I get the need to lol... But I don't knock those on vhosts; in fact I try to lookout for them whenever possible

talk about pot / kettle / black dude. you are the king of mis-reads and topic hijaacks. so get real. i misread vhost and reply vps and you get holier than thou on me. Man you fly off the handle easily... I simply asked you to reiterate your comments as to get a valid stance as I have several clients in VHosting environments and was looking for places to refer them to... Next time calm the hell down, all I wanted was your advice here... Though, you ultimately answered my question, which is a "don't bother with them" with: i don't know if i'd vouch for them as they started complaining about CPU loads for a medium sized board. As with "you get what you pay for" eventually every site grows out of a VHost ability, sites get large, that's the reason we start sites, to get popular. And sooner or later we have to go with dedicated resources (with a VPS) or even a dedicated server as to stop monopolizing a server.

Remind me not to bother with seeking advice from you in the future... It leads to nothing more than you blatantly flaming me and not even answering the question at hand usually... Sad when all I asked was "how are they with VHosting vs dedicated"...

Should still be yoursite.com/cgi-bin/
If you are not seeing that then your host has not mapped it properly - it might be cgibin or possibly something else. Can you explain this please? I've just installed Ubuntu on an old PC. I've installed apache as well. I've configured it so that instead of reading the default apache website it goes to /home/driv/public_html Now I guess I should put the cgi-bin in /home/driv/? (which is above the root???) OR should I do something like /home/driv/public_html/www/ and /home/driv/public_html/cgi-bin in which case, how do I 'map' it properly? Thanks

ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /whatever/the/hell/you/want/ in httpd.conf i prefer outside, but that's just me you also may need to add the handler(s).. apache might already have it built into the conf.. if not.. AddHandler cgi-script cgi pl

ok - I get part of it - thanks ...but what about the www and cgi-bin both in the public_html folder? Does that mean that the cgi-bin is inherently above root?

Sorry, replying to my own post If www and cgi-bin are both in public_html, doesn't that mean they are both at root? Perhaps I'm not understanding things properly here

well, the public_html folder normally IS the www directory lol; but you have to define where they both are... My example of a virtualhost: <VirtualHost 38.99.95.240:80>
SuexecUserGroup "#525" "#510"
ServerName corthell.net
ServerAlias www.corthell.net
ServerAlias corthell.info
ServerAlias www.corthell.info
ServerAlias corthell.us
ServerAlias www.corthell.us
ServerAlias corthell.ws
ServerAlias www.corthell.ws
DocumentRoot /home/corthell/public_html
ErrorLog /home/corthell/logs/error_log
CustomLog /home/corthell/logs/access_log combined
ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /home/corthell/cgi-bin/
DirectoryIndex index.html index.htm index.php index.php4 index.php5
<Directory /home/corthell/public_html>
Options Indexes IncludesNOEXEC FollowSymLinks
allow from all
AllowOverride All
</Directory>
<Directory /home/corthell/cgi-bin>
allow from all
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>

Googled 'Apache cgi-bin' and lo and behold... that should help you

quite easily, the scriptalias line defines the directory you want to use for your cgi-bin.
The directory specification defines what properties you want to allow as default for the directory.
