Since updating to 7.2.2 (from 7.1) I hadn't touched the "islands" on my forums but I just went in to try and make an update now and got the following message when I tried to update:
Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_VARIABLE in /home/sites/www.DOMAINNAME.com/web/cache_builders/custom/portal_box_3.php on line 7
Anyone able to help fix this!!

Take "test" out and see if it still errors. You could also try opening the php file itself via FTP vs the CP editor and see if some other content is straying.

Actually I just tried changing something else not related to the portal island (the "forums turned off" message) and I got the SAME message
!!

By "content straying" i mean something that isn't being read in; as it it looks fine i have no clue why you're receiving that error... you could try over writing the file with a blank island, which is merely: <?php
/* PHP CODE HERE */
/* BODY HERE */
$body = <<<EOF
EOF;
?>

I did that and then it came up with box4 as the problem. So I updated them all with the empty code and.... it worked.
I wonder why that was happening!!

How weird, there could have been an empty line at the bottom of the islands (after the ?>)

The persmission on those files is 666 - --- is that correct?

Yes, the permission 666 allows you to write to the files via the control panel. I'm however not sure why you're recieving these errors; it's quite out of the ordinary...

You could download the file to your pc and edit it, then re-upload it; it's in the cache_builders/custom

Hi, I am new to UBB. I just downloaded and installed it yesterday, so I don't know how it used to be. I had the same problem with trying to make a custom island. I messed with it and ended up entering my html code between the EOF lines and it works fine. Here's an example of one of my custom islands:

I have to admit that the default text does give the impression that your own text should be inserted in-between the top two comment tags. Perhaps it might be useful for new arrivals if the code looked like.... $body = <<<EOF

i actually like a suggestion Ian Spence made, where we split it into 2 textareas. 1 for php code 1 for markup etc then the behind the scenes stuff takes care of putting it in the right place.

Yeh, I like IanS and SD's idea of splitting it up, so people can't do stupid things to break their boards, like placing anything after the final EOF ... Protect them from themselves!
