Frustration With Cookies and Unread Post and Counts?

7.2.2 - Fire Fox

If i login to my forum or these forum and close my browser
windows or Log out. And return (By Logging back in )i see an accurate unread post count, unread topics
and so on, as expected.

BUT

If i don't log in and browse the forums,
well i only have to visit 1 post and then if i log in
again, say so i can reply, the whole post counts of unread
posts and post icons everything either show nothing or
everything in.

Mainly in a sub forum i will have to double click on the
post icon to clear them but i have to "Mark all as read"
to get a clear slate. As i'm generally informed that
every Topic and every Reply has not been read.

Is there any way to prevent this?
As its as frustrating as HELL.

TRY IT
View your forum with a few unread topics.
Log out.
Re visit your forum, and view one topic.
Now log back in.
Everything is either maxed or zero's where every you look. (Unread posts and post icons )

Its not just with 7.2.2 this its been this way since i can
remember and wondering if there is a fix, as it must be
very frusrating for new memebers.

Well maybe I'm not doing the same thing you're doing or maybe different browser or something but I don't seem to have an issue with it.

Ok this is a pictorial of what happens to me ?
It would be helpful if anyone can confirm if they get the same results, as i'm thinking its a bug.

Okay Browsing these forums i see unread posts and topics.
I've picked on the UBB 7 Discussion category but it happens on any.
Pay attention to the Bugs forum and the fact that there is
(2) Threads and (13) posts unread.

[Linked Image]

Now i log out.
And the Default Theme is present.
[Linked Image]

Viewing the UBB 7 Discussion category again, you can now
see that there is no "post icons" nor "Unread posts" as expected.

[Linked Image]

Now i click on the "Bugs Report Forum" and view the listings.
As expected no "Unread Posts" and no "Post Icons"

[Linked Image]

Just for good measure i click on the "Redneck" thread to read the post.

[Linked Image]

Okay that's as much as i need to do now to throw the
post tracking out.

I now have to log back in.

[Linked Image]

Now logged in i look at the UBB 7 Discussion category again
and the post icons show All as read (no New Posts) EVEN the Bugs Forum.
I have lost the (2) Threads and (13) posts unread. When i
logged out.

[Linked Image]

Now inside the Bugs Forum.
The Sub Forums shows everything is unread. (post tracking lost)
[Linked Image]

Still inside the Bugs Forum.
The Forum part shows everything is read. (Post Tracking Lost)
[Linked Image]

Even when i visit the other forums the pattern is the same.

[Linked Image]

I no longer have a tracking of what was read and what wasn't.

However. !
If i logged out and didn't browse the forum it would be as i had
left it. I would still have (2) Threads and (13) posts unread.

I always log in by entering my user name and pass, I don't use
the remember me options.

If you think its a bug please move to bugs forum.

As SD would say My 2c wink

Ahh i dont want to post this but its feedback.

I lost all post tracking as above.
Replied to my buddy in the "Temptation Thread".
And still all the forum feedback as in post icons is
there are NO new post. While looking at the main index page.

For the hell of it i decided to log out and log in again.
I done that and post tracking has come back?

My 2 and 13 in Bugs Forum have returned smile

But anyway, ive posted that as i found a work around,
but something IMO is still very very wrong.

I can recreate the above problem any time i mooch around a forum and forget to log in.

It happens when I'm reading a Thread and Realise I'm not logged in. Every time. frown frown frown

Thanks NT wink

I'm Using FF 2.0.0.9

But it happens with IE 7 too frown

I'm thinking of the newbie, if they get this too.
I do need more feed back to see if it is just me
or there is a real issue to foot.

It is a pain in the butt.
Yep a cookie issue but im on my laptop now and the
images and posts above were all done on my main machine.

So different machine, and the same issues.
If you have "Remember Me" and never log out this wont
be a problem to you, but if like me you type access
or your not logged in it is a big problem.

If anyone has 2 mins just to report back please .........
Cheers

Okay I think I was able to recreate what you're talking about.

Here is "my" take on what might be happening (just a guess, have not verified or tested theory)

When you log out you don't actually delete the cookie but maybe just alter the data in the cookie to be noticed as logged out.
However posts status read etc is still being updated in the cookie so when you log back in the read/unread is not correct.

IF that is what's happening or if it's cache/cookie mixture of issue then I would suggest that when you log out that the software actually delete the cookie and not just modify it, or create and use a DIFFERENT cookie for logged in vs not logged in.

Without looking I think there is different areas that are tracked some by cookie, some by DB but yes Mark I agree with you that it should not operate the way it currently does.

I rarely browse not logged in so did not notice it, but agree it's not done properly (IMHO).

Odd - ALL post indicators on forums show as blank (already read) now that I'm logged back in (there were many I had not read yet)

However by looking on the Active Topics for past 24 hours it does show indicators that I've not read it yet.

(IMHO) I think the 2 methods should coincide/match with each other.
Currently they both have to be using a different method of knowing what's been read or not read, but I'll leave that up to Rick and the other programming dudes to iron out.

Thanks for your feed back NT smile
Makes sense what your saying, as i think to a newbiee
login in and out there going to loose track of alot
of topics and loose interest fast.

Yeah, hopefully Rick will check on this any maybe get it fixed for 7.3 since it would appear to be a bug and not a feature request.

On a related note: in my 7.1, when I enter a forum, read what I want (and leave other threads unread), when I go back to cfrm it says that forum is Read (how I want it). On this site, however, it says Unread if I do the same thing -- I have to go into each subform for some reason as well for the Unread icon to show.

I don't actively use subforums so I'm not sure if that issue is present in 7.1 as well. It's just annoying when I'm here. wink
