So, just a few hours live and even though I'm not directing anyone there I've had my first user complain. They couldn't log in. Turns out they were trying to log in using their display name. We figured it out, but, honestly, I could see this being a common issue. Is there anything I can do to eliminate one of the fields on registration and make it so that the two values are always equal? Any advice?

yes, you don't allow display name changes in your configuration. that makes the display name always equal to the login name.. its in the control panel somewhere

I do have that checked in the Control Panel. It is in Featured Settings. My value is "No" to the question of "allow display name changes." But, I've got 2 registered users (Yaay! 2! ) who have different display names from user names.

I'd take and edit the register routine and have it read the PDN as the login name as well; would take some tweaking

Tweaking? Remove field for Y of the new user form, and let the new user form processor put the value of field X also in Y. That's not tweaking, that's doing it

I just added some text to the board rules that come up when you register saying that we "STRONGLY suggest that you make your user name and public display name the same to avoid confusion when logging in."
